Edinburgh Show

After being bullied by Scotgran and hauled out of the sick-bed (took THE bug but I am over it now) I had better put up a few pictures of Saturday’s show
When we go to any show like this the first port of call is the plant sales area to buy the goodies.
Then on ito the show hall
The primulas were a very noticable feature of this show. Held back by the winter they are just coming into their own now.
In the bulb sections there were few fritillaria on display but plenty of the smaller narcissi.
Finally, if you are having trouble getting to sleep tonight try counting the number of flowers on this! Androsace vandellii exhibited by Scotlands number one grower, Cyril Lafong.

Thank you for letting us have a little flavour of what went on on Saturday BB. When we were there the place was mobbed and there was no way I could have taken photographs. My favourite was the Erythronium in the fifth photo. It was glorious. The Androsace was unbelievable. To put it in perspective, those cards were quarter the size of an A four sheet . The sales tables were amazing too. I'm sorry to hear you were not too well but we are all delighted you got the rock garden bug because it adds so much to our appreciation of what is available to us as gardeners. I love going through the alpine houses at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens but it takes a show like this and talking to the knowledgable club members to bring it down to our level. Hope you are well on the mend. There are more photos of the show on Csarinas page. You lucky lass how did you manage to get in there to snap these when the judging was on.

I think Csarina took those pix before judging started. The Show Sec's are very firm on evicting all those who have no place in the show hall from said hall prior to judging starting.

I'm know she did, sorry for my little joke. I know the rules, having been Show Secretary of our village show for many years. I'm glad she did take them as they give us another perspective of the show.

Indeed I'd just like to know who she is as obviously she is a member of the Edinburgh SRGC group

Csarina has published some very nice pictures of individual plants that compliment my blog nicely. Thank you Csarina.

Are the plants on display sold at the end of the show, did you find any bargains?
15 Apr, 2010
Good lord no they are not sold at the end of the show! They go home with their mummies and daddies who love and cherish them and hopefully show them again. That Androsace will have taken years and years to grow to that size! But there are wonderful plant stalls where you will find a variety of rock garden plants not seen in any run of the mill garden centre. Some are rather more challenging to grow whilst others are not particularly difficult but seed is not so widely available.

Cyril's Androsace has appeared at shows for several years and gets bigger and better every time.
On the other hand, I occaisionally sell excess plants at the garden gate, and had taken a Cardamine off my sales table, potted it up and put it up for it to be awarded a Second. I donated two similar plants to the club sales table at the show and donated the the show plant to my own club raffle last night.
If anyone is going to Perth on Saturday there will be another two on their club sales table.

The club plant stall was excellent on Saturday. Members had donated a huge number of plants for sale. The ones I bought were a mixture of plants from the club stall and from the nurseries who had stalls also.
