Work In Progress and A Couple Of Visitors

Such a strange day today. The sky was filled with ominous dark grey clouds all day and there were a couple of very, very light showers that passed over quite quickly. Unfortunately the rain literally disappeared before it hit the ground!

This photo was taken during the lightest of light showers of rain! You’ll notice there’s no evidence at all of raindrops on the pavers.

Spent some of today working on re-vamping the area under the pergola, beside the pond. All the ferns have been ripped out and the palms cut back and removed. I’m working on making it a much more colourful space.

Last night we had a visitor. The Brush-tailed Possum (Trichosurus vulpecular) sat and watched us in the kitchen for a while before heading off into the night searching for food.

During the day we had another type of visitor hanging about. The Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novoguineae) was literally sitting on an old gum tree near the house for quite a while keeping an eye on our comings and goings.

Thank you BB for the interesting blog...your patio area looks quite Mediterranean...what a handsome kookaburra it is.Wonderful wildlife you have..we will all be much more genned up about your part of the world. We have relatives in Adelaide which is far different from where you are living.

We love our patio/courtyard area and spend a lot of time out there. There's quite a bit of alfresco dining that happens out there.

Yes, Adelaide is very different to my corner of Oz. It's a 28 hour drive away from us, over 2500 kilometres. I've been there a couple of times and really liked the city a lot.

Bb, some years back there was a hilarious film on TV about
Kookaburras. There was a flock near a house & the noise they made, throwing themselves up into the air as they did it, was horrendous. You wouldn’t want that to wake you up each morning. Also we watched all the live stuff which they pushed down their young’s throats, lizards, frogs, great big bugs etc. Then they had to be taught to make their cry & one wouldn’t do it( just burped), next was a flying lesson, again one wouldn’t jump off the branch so Dad came along & whacked it from behind. I wish I had a recording of it. It was very funny, but not something
be watched while enjoying a TV dinner, unless you have a strong stomach.

I've never seen that show Feverfew. Sounds like a hoot! I have to say that the kookaburras wake up call every morning is now just background noise to us. When we have visitors though, there are complaints!!! The Laughing Kookaburras are very noisy when you're not used to their call. I've also seen kookaburras eating toads and snakes and neither was a great sight!

I like the reworked space BB, it looks very light and airy now, ready for summer!
Seeing the wildlife especially the Kookaburra takes me straight back to my son's. They're quite tame too aren't they, I know the kookaburras like to sit on their balcony rail and just watch them..:))

Thanks Janey. I'm looking forward to seeing it progress and be filled with colours other than the green of the ferns and palms that were there! Yes, the Kookaburras here don't mind hanging around with the humans at all.

The area looks much lighter now, it will be nice to have some colour there :)
I hope your visitors didn't create too much damage.

Lovely blog, Bernie! Your cleared area looks great! Lots of colour added.
Saying that, I did like the before pic too..
Big lush green plants.
Your possum appears to be waving hello to you :-))
Friendly little guy!
The Kookaburra is a handsome bird, fab to see perched nearby, lucky you!

Thanks Hywel. I agree. The space looks a lot lighter and I'm already loving that. I was definitely getting sick of the overgrown ferns and all that green!

No, the visitors didn't create any damage at all. They just dropped by for a bit of a gander.

Thank you Kate. I have to admit one of the main reasons for clearing that space underneath the pergola was that I was getting rather sick of all the green! It was established that way originally because the ferns were easy to grow and very drought hardy. I'm after colour now.

I also rather like the fact that we probably won't get as many snakes using it as cover as we did previously!!!

I will look forward to seeing the finished area but I must admit, I do love the ferns.
Oh.. I don't like the thought of snakes in the garden!
Are they harmless?

21 Sep, 2024

I'll still keep some ferns in the space, but in pots so they don't take over. Most of the snakes here are harmless ones - our tree snakes and pythons - but I still stay out of their way if possible. We have had some nasty ones though, quite dangerous, but thankfully not too many of them in the almost 25 years we've been here.

More beautiful wildlife. The area in the first photo is beautiful Bernie. And I look forward to seeing the new revamped area as it develops.

The area looks much improved Bernie. And it’s lovely to see the Kookaburra 🙂. Last time we visited your country (Victoria and South Australia) we were delighted to see many kangaroos lounging about, and one Koala in a tree!

Bb, this is a lovely blog with great photos. We shall be meting up with a cousin soon who has returned to the UK from a year in Melbourne. She was able to stay with her daughter and grandchildren for one year on a 'Granny Visa'!

How wonderful that your cousin was able to stay for a year. I hope she enjoyed the time here in Oz, but also with her family.

Bernie, her eldest daughter lives there so Debbie (my OH's cousin) loved being with her two granddaughters for such a long time and threw herself into the Aussie way of life apparently! We hope to meet up with her soon and hear all about her 'big adventure'.
