Snakes alive !

Had a surprise this afternoon when stepping out my back door. Next doors cat teasing a grass snake. I wasnt sure what sort of snake it was to begin with, but having looked it up on google found it was a grass snake. Don’t know if it is living in my garden, or just slithered into it, but I hope I don’t come across it while gardening. I know they are harmless, but I still wouldnt like to scare one.

Well I wasnt petrified, I was more worried about the cat getting bitten, but once I knew it was a grass snake it was ok. I managed to keep the cat at bay while the poor thing slithered away into next doors garden.

Well I have never seen one here before, probably won't see him again, but he went off down the neighbours path. I did wonder if the cat actually brought it in.

I think Cinders as the climate warns up we can expect to see more snakes. We certainly now have Adders here in W.Yorks.
One problem is people buying exotic snakes as pets, they get too big so they foolishly let them go into the local country side.
personally I would like to see the purchase of all exotic animals banned.
Snakes are my worst fear, I cannot be rational when they are around.

Yes I think you are right grannyb about people letting snakes go when they become too big. My neighbour is terrified now, she has a severe aversion to snakes of any kind, and has had to shut her door now.

When we lived in Gran Canaria, the problem with pet snake being released became so big that they had to have special catchers to go out onto the barancoes and catch them.
Some of the snakes released were very poisonous, very small and very hard to see.

what a fantastic animal. There are only 3 british native snakes, adders, smooth and grass snakes. I have seen all in and around Yorkshire over the 30yrs I have been here. I love them.
I am so envious Cinders.

Looks a big snake - I would be freaked if I seen it

I would have been scared and stayed indoors until somebody had checked my garden for me...

Not sure what my reaction would have been, Cinders, probably to keep near the tail end! Fabulous pics of it . . . . .

Thanks everyone for your comments, Michaella there is normally a river behind my bottom fence, but it is dried up at the moment but I have not seen one here before. Sbg, you can have it if you want it. I shall be a bit wary when doing the garden now. Funnily enough I wasnt frightened of it, but if it had come towards me I would have moved a bit fast !
Thank you all.

That was a big one, we had a very large snake in our pond, our old one, we reckon it ate the rest of our fish, I must admit I do like them..... give me a snake over a spider any day lol a smashing picture Cinders.

Thanks DD. I must admit I like to see them, but don't really want it in my garden. Think its gone now.

You hope ! Lol.

Not so bad, Cinders. Good of you to save it from the merciless cat. We have garter snakes...they look much like your grass snake and they are harmless to people. In fact they control rodents in your garden...so if you have frogs, mice and rats...snakes will help you rid yourself of them. He was probably living happily in the stream at the bottom of your garden and when it dried up the frogs he'd been living on moved away into your garden...he followed the frogs, perhaps?

Yes you may be right Lori, but my next door neighbour has a huge pile of logs at the bottom of his garden, and I wondered if he was living in there, and maybe the cat brought it in, as they like to bring their trophy home.

I wasnt frightened at all at the time, it wouldnt hurt anyone if left alone, and its not venomous. Although I wasnt sure what it was till after.
