Kingston Lacey, Dorset

We took a well deserved break from assembling MDF today. It wasn’t raining! Halleluia! So we drove half an hour south West to Kingston Lacey. This House has a fabulous story to tell and a fabulous Art Collection. I have done a tour in the past, when Rachel was a volunteer guide there. But this time we had Willow so it was a walk around the grounds only. We aren’t allowed to take Willow into the actual gardens, but we were able to enjoy the Japanese and Kitchen Gardens and the beautiful Camellia collection.

The house from the Park land with beautiful horned Cattle.

The Japanese Garden

Highlights of the Camellia collection…

Early Magnolia. I think this is M. Loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ which made me feel sad as I had a young one in Scotland.

And a lovely early flowering Cherry blossom.

Golden bamboo highlighted by sunshine..

Then we crossed the road to the kitchen garden. This area was all but lost when the Property was handed to the National Trust. A lot of restoration work has been done, but more is needed. There are allotments within the garden, which was lovely to see. The glass houses have been repaired and house tender camellias, orchids etc. there is a tea hut beside a very nice children’s playground. I had a hot chocolate..yum. Then we drove the short distance to Wimborne Minster for lunch in a very nice pub there called The Olive Branch. It was delicious! We left home at 9.45 am and were home by 2pm. About 3 miles walked, mostly in sunshine. So a great short day out! The river at Wimborne was very high and fast. More rain forecast tomorrow.

Glad you had a peaceful day out. I’m always looking for Japanese gardens, so will make a note …

It is a beautiful place, Karen. It's years since we went there, when the g'children were tiddlers and spent a happy time galloping about. The house is a gem.

Thank you all. The weather is absolutely dreadful today. We have spent most of it building a wardrobe!

Thank you for sharing this post, Karen, I particularly enjoyed seeing the magnolia blooms. Several of my neighbours have magnificent specimens growing in their gardens but no breaking buds on them yet this year, hoping Jack Frost hasn't hit them too hard during the last couple if nights. The first blossom appeared in the hedgerows hereabouts last weekend, I hope he hasn't checked that display too much either. The catkins have been doing well though, which bodes well for nuts in the Autumn.

It looked a really lovely place and still interesting things to look at inspite of the time of the year.
I loved the camelias and the photos of you both with Willow.
And a hot chocolate, and lunch, a perfect end to a perfect day!

Karen, how lovely to see you out and about after you have felt so unwell recently, well done! It is a lovely place, one we haven't visited for some years. I love the Camellias.

Thanks everyone. I think I am as close to 100% as one can be over 60! :) The dizziness cleared up around the time of moving house.
