The New Land

I’ve never come up with an appropriate name for this part of the garden, its referred to as ‘over there’ or ‘the new land’ so it remains unnamed. Here’s a little history on this section.
Adjacent to our house there has been a plot of ground which has been there all my life, just wasteland really and it was only a matter of time before it was built upon and this happened in 2007, two detached houses were built. We endured a noisy disruptive year while they were being build and when finished they went up for sale and we were so lucky to have fantastic new neighbours who soon became our friends.
The builder only gave them part of the land as their gardens, which left a pocket of land which he retained, sitting between the end of their gardens and part of our garden. Time passed and the builder finally decided to sell this pocket of land. Janet and Peter didnt want all of theirs so offered what was left to us to buy – amazing, I couldnt believe my luck, of course we said yes. The timing wasnt great as I hadnt finished smashing clay after the pond re-dig but that was fine.
So the work started in 2010, it was so overgrown and had some old apple trees but mainly was covered in brambles and nettles and a fallen huge branch, it soon appeared it had been a dumping ground for many years.
We found bikes and bricks and glass and even a wheelbarrow full of set concrete.

As the ground was the other side of the brook another bridge (yes yet another) had to be built so that was the first thing John did, after cutting a hole through the hedge to get through to the ground.

Fallen Tree Branch – which John had to cut up

Bridge Finished – Being tested by Bonnie :-)

We hired a digger as it was such a big area and so many bricks to move around.

The apples trees were very old and unhealthy so they had to go.

The new bridge didnt stay clean for very long.

Beginning to take shape a little

Six long months later, I marked where the beds would be with sand and planted the first of the trees

The grass seed went down :-)

The rest is history …

I remember the excitement of buying a piece of my neighbour's garden (A Bit On the Side) but this is much bigger. Well done

This is inspirational, Dawn. I just love it. Will our Swedish plot ever get to this stage? :0)

Yes Linda, lots of hard work and it will. I didn’t start planting until 2011 and it’s looks decent for about 3 years. Have you seen my blog last week on The History of our Pond, that will be appropriate to you. ;-)

Thanks Siris, Janey
Lots of work but it’s been good, eventually when the trees mature it will be mainly just trees and spring bulbs, as of course it will change by then :)

Its wonderful. I can't imagine how you've achieved all that - and had the vision to plant it all, which is the most amazing thing to someone who can't visualise anything she can't see...
We are negotiating buying a smallish lot next to us at the moment but it will be mostly grass, trees and bulbs (If our offer is accepted...) Too old now for lots of digging and maintenance.

That's exciting for you Stera, I hope you get it, we had to negotiate with the seller, I guess we overpaid but I had to have it. This part will be just trees and shrubs eventually, it looked so bare so I've filled with perennials while they mature. I bought a book for ideas.

Hello Trudy, nice to see you on here, the blogs members post are brilliant and they can be saved in your favourites.
Thank you, glad you like it, have you decided what you are planting around your pond yet or are you keeping it as grass.
I'm a right glutton for punishment lol but love working in my garden.

Kind of you Dotty, I’m pleased Peter has enjoyed seeing my blogs. I still envy your perfect garden, mine is far from neat and some areas are a bit messy. I would love you to see it for real :-)
