Really Odd!

I have this ornamental bird box bought by a friend a few years ago, it’s on a pointed stick so it can be pushed in the ground, so I move it around the garden. As it’s Winter Ive placed it against the house wall, near the back door.
Roxy our cat was sitting on the windowsill at dusk looking at the box, so out came the torch and to our surprise there’s something in there! Yellow, fluffy and moving!!!
No sign of feathers just fluff.
It can only be a bird but in December!?
What do you think? :-)

Well Sheila, since I posted the blog a friend has told me it will be a blue tit using the box to roost for the night as it's so cold :-). I've never heard of this!

Bloomer, I know! So cute, this box is only a few feet from the door, with widows close and I've never seen birds using it.

Dawn, Wrens sometimes roost in bird boxes over the cold winter nights, as do Blue Tits. Poor little things!

Hi Shirley, thank you, I had no idea they did this :-) it has been cold this last week, it'll be warm next to the house :-)

Intelligent little birds ... :o)

How lovely Dawn, you must feel quite protective of the little thing 🙂.

yes i'd go blue tit by the colouring we can see. you often find several roosting together. we get them in the cavity in the wall by the back door. I am still waiting for OH to fill the gap but as they have nested here every year for the last 10yrs or so he wont fill in the gap.

Yup...was going to say Bluetit. Some birds will take refuge in nesting boxes during cold spells. How lovely!

Seaburn, how great having them nest each year so close to home.
Karen I had no idea they did this, he must have his head tucked under his wing.
At 7.25am, still in there, I suspect he’ll emerge at sunrise and return at dusk :-)

That is a lovely sight!

Judging by the colours I guessed bluetits, I don't blame them, do you?

Somebody found a cozy little hideaway.

To update - it was still in there at 7.30am, was gone by 8am sunrise, then returned at 4pm, it seems to have found a winter roost, I'm so pleased.

How lovely, Dawn. I’d be pleased too.

Aww, bless it! I have a bird-box which has been sitting on a low table outside my french windows for yonks waiting for some kind relation or friend to fix it to the wall ..... I'll press for help again, it seems a pity for an empty residence not to be used because it is in a busy part of the garden, right next to our bird feeding station and easily accessed by small mammals :-(.

Xela, once it's up you could get a bird roosting during winter with a bit of luck.
12 Dec, 2019
Its been added to my 'to do' list for this weekend, Dawn, fingers crossed!!
14 Dec, 2019
Yes fingers crossed. Ours is in the box right now, he goes in around 4pm. Im still amazed as I didn't realise they did this.
