A Bargain That Just Got Better

Just a quick blog that hopefully will make you smile. I was shopping today in Lidl and for a couple of weeks now they’ve been selling crocuses in pots. Originally they were £1.69 a pot (about 8 bulbs per pot) and last week they were selling them off at 49p, so I bought 4. Then today they only had 6 left at 25p per pot. They did look poor but I thought its worth getting them in the hope they’ll survive and come up next year.
When I got to the till, I told the young man that they were reduced to 25p. He just looked at me and said, “They look so dead that you can have them for free”. I thanked him very much and walked back to the car smiling, then the smile drifted from my face as I thought ….. he’s probably right, maybe they are dead.
I’ve given them a good soak and I’ll set them tomorrow and wait and see if they come up next Spring.

hopefully they will be o.k. Dawn, Lidl do some very good plants but it makes me sad when I go in and the poor plants have not been watered, to see them all wasting away, glad you got yours free.

Time will tell I guess.
I know what you mean Yorkshire - I wouldnt think these have been watered since they went in the shop.

i find alot of shops are like that dawn, get plants in then dont bother with them, whats the point, maybe because all young ones working there, someone a bit older would check them im sure.

I would Sandra, I'm sure you would too ;-) Maybe its something silly like Health & Safety - people slipping on wet floor, lol

Ha ha Janey. I'll set them quite deep to protect those white stems and give them some nice gritty compost and speak to them nicely.
I see you have red hazel flowers too :-)))

Well done Dawn. I can think of no reason why they shouldn't be alright next year. Afterall you buy crocus bulbs in a dry condition don't you!

What a bargain and how lovely to meet a shop assistant with some initiative - well done, that young man! Hope they do thrive for you, Dawn :)

I think you win the prize for the best bargain of the year, Dawn. I bet they'll be OK. My Lidl's 'Krokuses' got eaten by that pesky rabbit. Grrrrrrrr.....

Thanks everyone for you reassurances. It was so funny at the time though, as he looked at me in disbelief due to me wanting to buy them, ha ha.
Sorry for the painful reminder of yours now long gone Spritz.
25 Feb, 2010
Well done you i cant see them being dead, but even if they are they did'nt cost you anything so not lost anything, but i think they will be fine....

I'm not replacing them for the second time, Dawn - I'm waiting until the autumn, and then I'll plant more under chicken wire. :-(((
You're forgiven by the way! :-)))
25 Feb, 2010
The chicken wire is a good idea Barbara, more work though for you but well worth it.
Hello Clarice: Well, I've set them today in some nice gritty compost so we'll see.

Oh, Dawn, no need to worry! These plants look good enough. Sometimes bulb plants look slovenly after blooming, but next year you'll have a beautiful display!
25 Feb, 2010
They should be fine next year Dawn. Let the foliage die back naturally to provide nutrients and food to replenish the bulbs and don't let the bulbs become too wet so that they rot.
25 Feb, 2010
Thanks for your faith in the bulbs Uma/Grenville. I was just a bit worried that the bulbs may have dried out too much, but now I'll look forward to a good display next year, fingers crossed.

I wonder how/if they are showing signs of life?
20 Jan, 2011
Hi Skipscanda. No sign of them yet but no signs of any in other parts of the garden either. I'll be looking out for them :)
