Wee Anjimals

Grrr, what a year I have had with nasty wee animals and insects; most I’ve never had before – some seen, some not. Apart from the usual slugs, snails, etc., I’ve had rose leaf rolling sawfly, gooseberry sawfly, capsid bug, Lily beetle, greenfly and blackfly up the yinyang, something horrid eating the strawberries (not identified yet but looks a bit like a silverfish but dark grey) and now I’ve just discovered some lavender beetles! Needless to say, all have been squished where possible!

Wonder what’s to come next?!

oh digginfit what a pain for you, could you encourage some other beasties to eat the first lot of beasties? I have been reading Alan Tichmarsh's garden design books, just out, they are great. have started a logpile for critters to live in, the greenfly have disappeared think that is the ladybirds..

greenfly disappeared since you made the log pile cazcat?

I've got log-piles, hedgehog house, bird feeders, ladybird houses, bumblebee homes - all sorts cazcat. But I think one of the main problems has been the weather this year, ideal for bugs! Fortunately I have managed to keep on top of them but the problem with the lavender beetle, apparantly, is that it has no known predators so it's a matter of picking them off before they have chance to breed.
I may take a look at Alan's new books although I have quite a few design and wild life gardening books. Thanks for the tip though.

Poor you, I had loads of lily beetle this year and my viburnum has been badly attacked by horrid viburnum beetle. I did pluck up the courage to stamp on the lily beetle and picked off the affected viburnum leaves ...and stamped on them too. Felt like Ming The Merciless! I had wasps in the garden one year...they kept down the greenfly. This year the house sparrows are doing their bit:-)

Well done to those little heroes the sparrows!

I had forgotten about Ming the merciless - but I'm going to enjoy copying his antics on slugs and lily beetles! They have had enough of my garden!
