Meadow buttercup is a perennial weed. It is recorded up to 4,000 ft in Britain. It is characteristically found on grazed and mown grassland. It is a weed of old grassland and its abundance is considered an index of the age of the pasture. Cattle know to avoid the fresh plant as the ranunculin content is high, also its presence reduces the productivity of pasture. Hold it under your chin – if it reflects yellow on your skin its said ‘you like butter’.

love buttercups, :)) do you think there are as many around as there used to be or am I being 'nostalgic'?

I remember doing the "butter" thing when young. You always saw daisies with buttercups where I live, and we made daisy chains... oh halcyon days...lol

Yes we would sit in the sun making the chains.

My brothers and I use to climb trees and hide and when he came along we bounced conkers off the village bobby's helmet. Unfortunately I was the only one he could catch!
