Thirsty birds

I have noticed my bird bath is in great demand the last few days, so I am keeping it very full. The lack of rain must make it very difficult for some wild life to find water.
The fish are at the bottom of the pond and the level is slowly dropping. Hopefully we will have a thunderstorm so the water buts will fill up and I can top it up. Last time we had prolonged dry heat a very long snake sat in the pond for about 5 days.
Even my cat is sitting in front of the fan. Hope you are all coping as we are just not use to it!!!

But if it rain's we will soon start complaining lol so enjoy it while we can and make sure we are not like the song Mad dog's an English Man / Welsh Woman goes out in the mid day sun lol .

Same here Drc the Blackbird bathes in it daily in this heat, so it needs topping up when he's finished splashing about, I've not seen snakes.....thankfully :o)

I,ve noticed the blackbirds especially are pecking in the pots, I guess its moist there whereas the clay soil is rock hard

A very important point Drc, it's vital that we leave some water out for the wildlife. I've notice our little water feature is getting a lot more attention these days, but we have also left a small, shallow bowl of water just in the shade, for those critters unable to get to the feature. Just need to keep checking it's full and not gone green lol!
As for the sun...I'm loving it, apart from the constant watering every day, but I appreciate there are those who find it difficult to cope with.

It reached 32 here yesterday and already its hot this morning. Tonight I will have to water the garden as well as tubs and baskets as I have noticed I some droopers in the cracked clay areas.

I had to top my fishpond up last week Denise, we are also on clay and the cracks are everywhere even starting in the shady areas now, the birds seem to be staying hidden during the day, except the daft pigeons and doves, they are cooing away as I write....

Things are slowly getting hotter, here in Glasgow, but you guys are set for a heatwave, I hear!

18 Jul, 2013

It's very hot here 84 on the patio and 84 in our bedroom!!! Ghastly.

I hope you are all right in this intense heat Denise. I feel sorry for your fish. I hope the water isn't too warm for them.
Actually I can cope with this much better than frost and snow. I find those very depressing. This is just hot lol.
Bella spends her day sleeping inside a clump of Michaelmas Daisies down the bottom of the garden :o)

31 degrees here today and I am struggling a bit Hywel as I was diagnosed with Asthma and Anemia about 10 weeks ago and although I am much better, controlling my breathing is harder in this heat and I am still learning how to control it with 2 inhalers.

18 Jul, 2013

I'm sorry to hear that Denise. It sounds very difficult for you :o( I hope it cools down soon.

18 Jul, 2013

Its not as bad as it sounds Hywel as long as I dont do too much when its hot.

18 Jul, 2013

That's all right then :o) Take care ...
Another scorcher today !

82 - 84 predicted for Glasgow today. Bring it on. Lol.
Know how you feel, Drc.
I'm emphysemic.
I find a steady fluid intake helps with my breathing.
Hope you feel a bit more comfortable.

Thanks Mouldy emphysema must be difficult at the best of times never mind in this heat.

Oh dear, sorry your suffering a bit, Drc. I'm like Hywel, prefering the hot to the miserable, bone aching cold and wet.
Just a word of warning to those of you with ponds, water features etc, according to Garden News, we shouldn't top them up with tap water as this encourages algae. If tap water HAS to be used, it should be drawn into a something like a watering can, then left to settle for a couple of days.

I hear a green pond is a healthy pond, as all the eco systems are in balance at that point.

Only reporting..don't shoot the messenger lol!

Hi Waddy I dont top my pond up from tap water as it will kill my fish. I use my water butts for this but they are empty and my pond is the lowest I have ever seen it in 15 years. I pray for a storm then the butts fill up and so does the pond.

21 Jul, 2013

I've got my fingers crossed for you Drc, Between 12.00 midnight and 6.00am would be ideal. Not a downpour just steady rain...please :)

22 Jul, 2013

We are promised heavy stoems tonight or tomorrow Waddy.

I was listening to radio2 & some professor was waffling on about ponds.
I was just repeating, parrot-fashion, what he said, Waddy. Lol.
Me, I know nothing about ponds. :-)
