Not fair garden referee.....

I know I’m a rubbish gardener but I don’t think it’s playing by the rules for my nasturtiums to look absolutely fine one day…positively blooming in fact…& then disappear into thin air…
(Yes they are old photos but I’m just proving a point!) …. I was admiring them one day & a couple of days later when I hadn’t been in the garden due to the rain I went out to find they had been completely trashed by black flies & caterpillars…
….& all the flowers have died…gutted!

Horrid?? Brilliant sunshine here......sorry, I'm not really gloating!
Bad luck Fluff, they were gorgeous. Just goes to show you can't take your eye off things for a minute, as soon as your back's truned the nasty little whatsits creep in. You've been spending too much time on here!

Oh Fluff, so sorry to hear about your flowers. My snails n slugs etc may have been responsible but only if they caught the midnight express ! Really sorry. Sugarbevs. x
23 Aug, 2009
Oh Fluff, they are sooooo nasty and damn quick?
23 Aug, 2009
You enjoy your gloat, Lily2.....our time will come....hopefully...but not today :~((
Yesterday was a cracker - and two days in a row....no way!
As I was saying on Fluff's other blog....
God made rainy days so that gardeners could get their housework done - and nonsense written on blogs!!
Mind you I SHOULD be out with a pail of salt water to get these snails etc...mine don't wait for the dark!!

Poor you!
IF it stops raining, I'll go & check mine out! That happened to me last year, had a great display, went on hols, & when I came back- nothing!
Just not fair, is it? :~((

23 Aug, 2009
Ha ha! I need to empty my shed to fit in the base units & worktops, but its too wet to put everything out!! Ah, well, back to the paint!!
23 Aug, 2009
You have just reminded me why I don't grow "nastyurchins" any more....lol :))
23 Aug, 2009
That's wjhat I used to call them too!!
23 Aug, 2009
Thank you for your sympathy one & all...can't believe how fast it happened!
Usually I pick the caterpillars off before they cause any damage & spray the black critters with soapy water but a lot of things have been left undone due to the disappointment of looking out to another wet, soggy day this year. ;0(
Never mind it's full sun here today & very warm...tho' that's no consolation for my 'nasty urchins'! Grrr.

Oh no...my secret's out!!! No...I may not wear dresses very often but I am a girly!
I did that to Oddbillie the other day Amblealice.
23 Aug, 2009

23 Aug, 2009
I thought you'd laugh Marie in light of poor Dan's gender change!
23 Aug, 2009
Alice had me a bit concerned there Fluff because last night you were talking about an ex boyfriend!! lol
23 Aug, 2009
LMAO!!
23 Aug, 2009
I know I've been bragging to MP today that it's been hot & sunny here but my hubby (paying attention Amblealice?!) has lit a small fire tonight as he fell asleep on the sofa earlier (wine-with-lunch-induced) & when he woke up he was chilly. Aw bless...
I, on the other hand, was not at all chilly...quite flushed in fact... as I had been doing ALL THE WASHING UP!
Anyway, I digress...I showed him the destruction that was the nasturtiums & he was agog at the black swarm of flies that completely covers every stalk that's left & promptly cut them all off & put them on the fire!
I felt ever so slightly vindicated...but we left the caterpillars chomping away as there's not much left to chomp anyway & I kinda like them....
23 Aug, 2009
I did find it funny Fluff! , Especially Lily's subsequent comment!!
23 Aug, 2009
It is difficult to work it out sometimes...not my own gender but other Goyers you understand!...I'm sure it'll happen again sometime!
23 Aug, 2009

23 Aug, 2009
You KNOW what I've been saying, you just read it!!!!!!!!!
Honestly! Men...........!
No need to throw your dummy out! LMAO!! Again!
23 Aug, 2009
Thanks Carol...it is a shame when they were so vibrant...should've kept my eyes on those pesky white butterflies!...& the blackflies!
23 Aug, 2009
What a terrible disappointment for you :o(
That happened to me last year. - all eaten away. This year however they are smothering everything else - so perhaps you'll have better luck next year.
23 Aug, 2009
This didn't happen to the straggly ones opposite...only the best ones! I suppose we all like to eat in the best restaurants!
23 Aug, 2009
lol - they're not daft then, those catterpillars :o)
23 Aug, 2009
I have had no problems with my nasturtiums! I haven't seen so much as one blackfly on my nasturtiums this year! Caterpillars are another matter though! I've watched as the butterflies laid their eggs on my nasturtiums but I didn't take any steps to eliminate them either (the eggs, not the butterflies). I've seen dozens of caterpillars on the leaves of my nasturtiums but they seem to disappear within a few days of hatching. I've done absolutely nothing to stop them chomping on the leaves & by rights there shouldn't be a leaf left on my nasturtiums but they are still coming along fine. Whether the wasps are taking them away or they are just dying off I have no idea!
24 Aug, 2009
You can go off people can't you LOL!! :0)xx

Join the clan! If it wasn't such a horrid (understatement of the day!) morning - I would go out and take pics. just like yours of my massive patch that looked glorious until the big hatch of caterpillars just about wiped out the lot. This year - being the year of the butterfly ..lol...has its downside obviously!!
