`GARDENERS` WORLD. TOBY`S TIP

Did anyone see GW Toby`s tip on deterring Squirrels? I wonder was he, really serious?
Chilli Powder in the Bird feeders….do not know whether to try it or not, i may
give it a go.

Pumpkins, did you see how many Toby had in their plot? Are they really
nice to eat? I have never eaten them, or ever tasted them..all i think of when
Pumpkins are shown or mentioned is `Halloween` lol. I have seen the huge
ones that are grown in Allotments, they are amazing!!

I did think, last Friday`s GW was so interesting, i had a little giggle to myself looking at Toby`s hair it looked like he, had just got out of bed and forgot to comb his hair…mind you, i suppose when we do gardening, we never
look our best, that`s if you really do, get stuck into the dirty & ardous tasks
that have to be done lol..

Back to the Squirrels…Is anyone on GOY going to try this, like me?
I would, like to know if someone has, already tried already?
Just a few pics of of the mentioned Squirrel & an update pic of Teddy…

I have and it works they say

25 Aug, 2010

`When did you try it Sixpence? Did you know about it before Toby
informed us? Or did you know about it before? I still cannot believe that
Birds can stand the taste of Chilli..lol Thanks, for letting me know
Sixpence....now we need something to keep the Squirrels off our Seed feeders fat balls & suet blocks etc...The only thing we can do is feed the
Squirrels with there, own products that can be bought from RSPB
or the www.gardenbird.co.uk If you can`t beat them, join them lol
But, that is only if you like the Squirrel in your garden???

Hi Floribunda, Yes I did know before as many people have tried it here and it works also works on stopping dogs messing on your lawn, even thought I have a better option to cats and dogs messing a large clear water bottle filled with water laid on its side will stop the cats and dogs.

25 Aug, 2010

I've heard this before and know of a couple of people who've tried and they too say it works !!!
Seeing as the birds have that difference in their taste buds, to the squirrels, it seems a good idea.

Hi all been reading nice blog
I've got farmers dog peeing on gate post, he will knot stop the dog . Sixpence can you give me more info please.

25 Aug, 2010

Yes Jiffy, get a large pop bottle take any lable off it and lay on side filled to the top with water, at base of you gate post or sprinkle the chilli powder as not sure how the bottle of water works but it does they do this a lot in Ireland too.

25 Aug, 2010

Thankyou sixpence
will give it a go,chilli powder not good in the rain??
have used garlic (so so)

Any weeds by gate or post remove as this is what normally attracts dogs to leave their scent, territorial, as other dogs go by and wees or leaves a scent on the weeds which attracts other dogs.

This reminds me of a dog we had a few years ago when she was teething. After gnawing at the corner of a skirting board we spread mustard on it to deter her.
Big mistake, she must have thought "Where's the beef ?" as more wood was nibbled away !
We had to put bleach on it to really put her off,she stayed well away after that :)
So I hope your squirrels don't end up asking "Where's the minced beef ?" :))

yes did see it, never tried it cos dont have sqirells lol. 1 a year .thats it. i put food in a hanging cage, in the tree, only the birds can get in. u can eat pupkin ,roast it or make soup .lovely . love g.w. shud b on every day lol.

25 Aug, 2010

Thanks, Flori for asking, after my Health...i keep going down with these rotten colds, which seem to go to the chest, still, thats enough of that...So, you are just waiting on your results now, i bet, you are feeling a bit nervous, just
like you were, when you took them at school, when younger..you will do well
my friend, you have so much confidence, anyway you deserve it, after all the lessons you passed on to us..it is so nice, being in touch again!!

25 Aug, 2010

I will give it a try Sixpence, i have the reassurance that it does not harm the
birds, as Louise mentioned, their taste buds differ to the Squirrel, it really does seem like a good idea!

Thanks Louise, for informing me, that it has been tried & worked...i do like your new avatar!!

Aster, what a great story of your dog & Mustard...i bet, the Bleach burnt her
tongue, that is why she did not attempt it again..i laughed so much at the end of it...the birds may well be looking for some minced beef, as it sure goes well
with Chilli, Aster LOL

Hi, Cristina, cannot believe that you only see a Squirrel now & again?
I thought everybody, had their fair share of the Squirrel..i know what you mean about the type of cage you have, is it dome shaped? `Do you roast
Pumpkin & make soup yourself? sounds great!! Yes, i am quite a fan of
GW too..: ~ )))

Hello, Deida, so glad you like this Blog...you say you had, 2 dogs in past tense, they are no longer with the family now? I bet, they were beautiful dogs
Deida. What breeds were they?

I told my friend Gill about the chilli powder deterring squirrels bit it seems the squirrels round here like things spicey as it hasn't stopped them in her garden. She is going to try it at double strength and see if that works

25 Aug, 2010

Freesia I don't think she got past the whiff of the bleach so no harm done lol :) The thing with the chilli is,if they get used to it will you keep having to use a stronger one as they acquire the taste ? :))

26 Aug, 2010

The chili powder doesn't surprise me, since birds can't taste it, and it may give extra color to some of them!

26 Aug, 2010

Oh! Oh! Squirrels who like Spicy Nuts... your friend seems to have a problem
then Andrew...please let us know, if they also, like the double strength taste
LOL..

I am so glad she never burnt her tongue Aster...were you, talking of the Birds
or Squirrels....Well lets hope our Squirrels, are not like Andrew`s friend Gill
her little critters, actually like spicy nuts...LOL

I am still trying to work that 1 out Tugbrethil...give extra color to some of
them..explain...was it a joke?

Sorry to hear you have been unwell hope this weekend is a turning piont for you and that you are back on your feet.
Teddy Teddy Teddy what a very handsome boy you are I bet the girls like you.

Did have the squirrel nicking all my oinion sets that I put down but now have chicken eggs putr in my plant pots!!

27 Aug, 2010

I was wondering if the squirrels may acquire a taste for stronger and stronger chilli Fp lol :)
Did you notice that Toby used an expensive brand of chilli ? I would have thought any old brand would do :)

27 Aug, 2010

Hello Pd...aww!! so nice of you to think of my health Thanks!!
Have not seen you, for the last 2 wks? perhaps next Friday?
Thank you, for your lovely comment regarding Teddy, this pic was taken
at Bedford`s Park...he, really enjoy`s going there...perhaps you should put
some Chilli powder on your onions? LOL

Perhaps some Retailer may pick up on the idea, and start selling Chilli
flavoured nuts for the Birds Aster...even double strength!!! LOL
I suppose GW, have to make everything look good so Toby, had to have the best, cannot be seen with the cheap brand LOL again...: ~ ))

I noted your comment about using pumpkins. Have you ever made a pumpkin pie....it's a favourite in Canada & USA. It takes a bit of effort to cut up the pumpkin and either roasting it and scooping out the pulp or peeling it, chopping and cooking it, but the flavour is superb.

I know you're not in good health just now so it may be impossible for you to try it this year...maybe next year?

This is the time of year to enjoy the pumpkins and the pie with a glob of whipped cream....ooooh....too nice for words. Yummy :)

The squirrels don't visit our side of the road but they are plagued with them in the gardens opposite us. They have a large group of trees behind their properties and the squirrels have taken up residence big time. I'd love to have one or two visiting me. I watch them when visiting my daughter's garden...they sure can scarper! lol

27 Sep, 2010

As a pro pest controller and a keen gardener I was interested in all the comments, I know there is only one, perhaps 2 ways to control a Squirrel, I am sure you all know what they are.
I sell 100s of traps after the Chilli has been tried !
www.greenpestco.com

27 Sep, 2010

Don't get so many squirrels in our little garden but mice the odd one or two then it was time to do something & we caught about 8 but now they are back & avoid all the baited traps, maybe they all ganged up on the squirrels & forced them out of the neighbourhood ?

29 Sep, 2010

A recent tip of Tobys' was to soak bulbs in tonic water for an hour before planting (it has to have quinine in it). Good maybe for new bulbs but probably won't have the same effect if watered in !
Still not sure about Toby I keep wondering if I'm watching play school , "lets look through the ......round window " :)))

30 Sep, 2010

`Thank you Whistonlass on the tips regarding cooking of pupkins & other
things that can be done with them....all sounds so delicious!! I would love to try a piece of Pumpkin pie with glob of cream, this is making my mouth
water. `i feel so hungry now lol....

`It`s so strange that they are plagued with Squirrels on 1 side of the road
but you are not??? They must have something, that you do not seem to have
Whistonlass, that must be attracting them? A Nut Bush perhaps!! lol

30 Sep, 2010

I think it could be our busy road....it's a suicidal act for them to get across! lol But there are also a lot of very high, mature trees backing onto the gardens across the road and it seems that's where they prefer to camp up.

Well....in my 'garden' I'm the only nut available, Freesia....lol And yes, it's time to dig out the recipes for the pumpkin pie...soon be available at the local farms as I've not any growing here.

30 Sep, 2010

`You must have super human mice Davey?.....Squirrels are probably too
scared of them,as you say chased them out of the Neighbourhood...lol

Aster, i do think Toby`s tips are a tad weird, but, it seems most agree on his
Chilli Tip...some say it works!!

Have you tried it yet Aster? I would love to know if it does? It`s about
this time now, that we should be planting our bulbs!!! Anyhow, i think
Toby is the type of person who grows on you after a while... i have come to
like seeing him on `Gardener`s` World`.....

30 Sep, 2010

It is surprising how adventurous these little critters can be, as you say it is
the right environment for them, to stay....the tall trees are ideal for them to hide in, so they cannot be seen. `Could those trees, by any chance have any type of nuts on them i wonder? So it could be an ideal place to camp
& also have a food supply too? So who wants to cross a busy road, if
they have everything they want, where they are? lol `I do feel sorry for you, Whistonlass...it is nice to be able to see them in the garden? But, some say they are just rats with bushy tails....i disagree...think they are cute.. : ~ ))
