Wow, stunning. Keep taking photos for us as they open, won't you? Are they early, or is this normal for early February? BTW, I used to work in Reading....at Courage's, when the brewery was still down on Bridge St. Oooh now that makes me feel old...

Elke - this is a winter flowering clematis so this is its usual time. It goes into a summer dormancy which can be a bit worrying if you're not expecting it but starts into growth again in autumn

Wow! awesome display, glad to be seeing photos again, after stupidly, blocking the "site" by mistake.

Andrew. I really love this clematis and note its summer dormancy. Do you know if I could get it to climb over a pergola? I would have to plant it in a very large pot though as I have no soil beside the pergola.

Bluethumbs - this gets to between three and four metres (according to my clematis book) but I'd say mine was nearer six metres before I started trimming it back by about half each year after flowering (it is climbing over a winter flowering viburnum). As with all clematis, it likes cool roots and its head in the sun - if you can provide that then it would be worth trying in a large pot

That's exactly the home I can offer this wonderful plant, Thank you, Andrew.

This is just the thing for my new gazebo!!

Tetrarch - please note my comments above. This is a winter flowering clematis (typically in February) and it goes into a summer dormancy when it loses its leaves before starting into regrowth about September

The very reason Andrew, I will also have a Banksia rose and another two clematis on the structure, so will offer some greenery right in the middle of the garden in the winter! I assume its hardy?

Seems very tough - has not flowered the last two seasons but is growing lustily
11 Apr, 2011
Lusty is what is called for Andrew, as it will be exposed in the middle of the garden, tho I will probably choose the east to west orientation (the gazebo has four "sides") and put the banksia on south to north. That survived well in a pot over the winter and is growing very nicely and showing buds. I was hoping to get a Love Child clematis from Taylors but they were sold out. Might find one later this year. Pity I cant find an evergreen climbing rose tho! Never satisfied, are we lol!
