JR and DAWN ... romancing in the rain.

JR and DAWN ... romancing in the rain.

Dull, rainy day, but Garry elliptica "James Roof" shows off his handsome tassels for Viburnum bodnantense "Dawn".

Very Nice TT :o)

25 Jan, 2012

You did a good job of convincing me to get one of these, TT. Even when I get one, it will take a while to look as good as this, though! How old is it before it starts producing tassels?

25 Jan, 2012

Thanks Amy.

Oji ... My JR produced tassels when quite small, but looks more majestic now that the branches have gained height.

26 Jan, 2012

Two beauties that I would like to try after the move :o)

26 Jan, 2012

I do like your JR, TT. I have one on my wish list. I have just ordered some plants online with 50% off from the Garden Centre but the JRs were out of stock :(

27 Jan, 2012

Hi Gee ... I hope you can acquire a JR.

Last year around my garden, I planted three very baby JR's, which I'd grown from cuttings... so that means unfortunately no spare babies at the moment ... :o(

27 Jan, 2012

There's a nursery a few miles away, TT, which I hope to visit during half term (when my daughter can take me - although I have asked her yet!!). I hope they will have one :)

27 Jan, 2012

Fingers crossed :o)

Thanks Homebird ...
They provide lovely winter interest for many months...

Tried to get a Garry Elliptica a couple of years ago after reading they worked well on a north faceing wall but was unsuccessful, some lovely ones this year I have noticed but much too big for my tiny garden.Terratoonie will they still flower if they are pruned?

31 Jan, 2012

Hi Poppylinda ..
Good question.
I've found by trial and error that it is a case of selective pruning, in the springtime.
Try to leave a few untrimmed branches each year, to ensure you get the lovely JR tassels :o)

31 Jan, 2012

Thanks for that,Terratoonie very useful,I will note that down incase i come across one on my travels They only catch your eye when they are in flower.

31 Jan, 2012

I find JR a nice all-year shrub because of the ever-green leaves. The tassels start developing at the start of winter. My JR is not far from my kitchen window and it is fun watching the tassels grow.

Pleased to see you on GoY Poppylinda.
We lost a couple of good members this week, but it is encouraging to welcome friendly newcomers. :o) x

Thanks,as i said on my profile/blog (my friend sharnford tells me its in the wrong place!!) I,m new to this computer lark but you know what I'm getting quicker all the time on this keyboard, not being a typist,in fact everything else is takeing second place at the moment, not sure THAT is such a good thing, but hey isnt that what retirement is all about doing what you WANT to do not what you HAVE to do??? X

31 Jan, 2012

Linda ... you are absolutely right...
GoY is rather addictive... but a good addiction :o) x

Just beautiful Terra :o)

1 Feb, 2012

That is a beautiful JR. I wish I could grow it where it could have full rein to grow as it should and aren't these tassels to die for.

22 Nov, 2012

Thanks N3tyy and Scotsgran :o)

Here's another .. a view of JR looking up from below ...

I'm falling in love again!! It really is one of those plants that you continue to enjoy each year. I look forward to seeing the tassels. I might not have any this year because I cut it back hard after neglecting it the previous year.

22 Nov, 2012

Hi Scotsgran ...
JR's tassels grow for many months, starting late summer, and they are near my kitchen window, so I have fun watching them grow throughout the autumn and winter. :o)

24 Nov, 2012

Ours don't start flowering till about the end of September.

24 Nov, 2012

I think, because my JR is over the dog run, near the kitchen, I walk past him many times a day ... so I notice every stage of the development of the tassels, from the very tiny beginnings !
