Aw, that's a shame Sue, they are pests now and again aren't they........I was waiting for a lovely deep pink lupin to flower, then I found it snapped off on the garden...:o(

Beautiful flower, I have some that have germinated and about 1" tall at the moment, I dont know much about them, so have to read up to ensure their ongowing progress.

Hi TNGardener and Pondlady, these Verbascums were from a packet of seeds I grew a couple of years ago. As I remember, they were sown in Spring in ordinary compost, and as we didn't have a greenhouse then, they were put by a windowsill to germinate......I think they probably took 4 weeks at least to come through, but they were planted out for the summer and had flowers on that year. Sun or shade seems to suit them and when the main stem has flowered, I trim it off and more side stems grow on..........really quite easy with a selection of colours..........:o)

This is a beautiful colour. I uploaded some pics of my Verbascum this morning but they are the common ol' yellow ones. I was really disappointed because I thought I'd sown seeds for copper coloured plants but must have mixed the seed up. Is this a perrennial one Jane, or biennial???
7 Jun, 2009
Oh, that's a shame Paul.....I like the yellow ones too, though. These are perennials and are one of the first summer plants to flower.......I could save some of the seeds from this one if you'd like some?.....:o)

Thanks, Janey. That would be very nice of you. I love trying to grow perrennials from seed because they can take a long while to get going but, if successful, you have them for years to come to remind you of your success. I am still pleased with my plants but was a little disappointed at first,. They have grown into impressive plants though, as are these in your garden.

Just checked yours Paul...they'll be stunning in a couple of weeks when fully in flower...and so tall too. Mine are delicate and only about 2ft in height.
7 Jun, 2009
Yes, giants Janey. But the delicate ones are nice as well. I had one calle Violetta(I think) but it seems to have been swamped by some other plants as it only grows 12/18 inches high and I can't find it! The big ones with the furry leaves like mine seem to withstand the hot sun well which is why I put them in my front garden(south facing!)

I Love it.

Lovley colour

Yes they do Paul....you find them in the Spanish hillsides as beautiful as ever, in the driest rockiest areas!
Thanks TL and Morgana.....still flowering now.....:o)

great photo, I had gainsborough many moons ago from NEC garden show it was fantastic and flowered for ever, but short lived.

I must get some of these in my border. When do I need to plant them please, I don't know anything about them but they would look fab behind a purple Monarda Aquarius what do you think!

Sorry Misstee....don't know how I missed your comment??
These were grown from a packet of seeds about 3 years ago.
I planted them in the spring, and they grew well in their pots, then planted them out in Autumn and they flowered the following Spring. The leaves tend to lie flat to the ground so it's always a pleasant surprise when the flower spikes shoot up.....:o) Yep, would mix well with your Monarda, though these only reach about 2.5ft....not as tall as the yellow olympicum.
