Snowdrops round the ash tree.

Snowdrops round the ash tree. (Galanthus nivalis)

These are mostly Galanthus nivalis - the single kind. My doubles seem to flower first.

Oh wow. Just what we need to see after all the snow. I ordered mine :-) but I guess the weather's been too bad to lift them. Have these spread over the years SpH?

They are really lovely. At the moment I have 2!
In one of the weekend papers there was a list of Snowdrop Events around the country, the nearest to me being the Chelsea Physic Garden where they have over 75 species. I think I'll check before I go to make sure they are not under a foot of snow.

that looks lovely Spritz, a real spring picture

Very pretty snowdrops.
Are other bulbs planted there too ?

4 Feb, 2009

No - just snowdrops! The tree roots would make it too difficult to plant any bulbs needing to be deep.

Yes, Dawn, they do spread. I even found a few wanderers in the grass today but it was too cold to dig them up and transplant them elsewhere. I'll have to wait until after the next fall of snow now! :-(

On Exmoor, there's a famous valley full of snowdrops. You park in a pub carpark and a small coach takes you down to the beginning of the 'Snowdrop Valley'. Then you walk! We have not yet managed to get there - from the local forecast, nor will anyone else at the moment.

Wow! They just give me such a boost, every year! My dear Grandmother loved snowdrops, and I always have associated them with her drop-pearl necklaces and earrings. Perhaps, this is why I like snowdrops before the petals open? She died, in March 1974, and her coffin was totally bedecked with snowdrops, many of which we picked and arranged ourselves.

We wouldn't be allowed to go out and pick them from the wild, nowadays, would we?

lovely Spritz.

That's a lovely big clump. Mine get split up and spread round the garden quite a lot so I never get a lot in any one place.
Cyclamen would also grow in the soil round a tree if you wanted something else there

Wow! very different from my two! - my first year though! Our local 'Snowdrop Day' at Pencarrow was a washout last Sunday so hoping this weekend will be better weather and plenty of snowdrops at Bosvigo House in Truro.

Andrew: Would you say that Cyclamen would grow in in similar situations to snowdrops?

11 Feb, 2009

I couldn't plant Cyclamen there, sadly, as they would have to be in the grass and that gets mowed. I don't think the leaves would have disappeared in time....would they?

OK, thanks Spritz
