Happiness is.......

I am afraid this is a pictureless blog, but there’s none I can upload.
Our summer resident cuckoo is back! I was digging the garden this morning, OH brought me a welcome and timely cuppa, and we both heard his call ringing loud and clear across the valley. There has been so much written and discussed about their demise, that each year we wait with baited breath for his call. One year it was well into May before we heard him, and we feared the worst.
I know that by the time June is underway, we shall be getting rather tired of him calling every few minutes as long as there’s daylight, but I can’t imagine a cuckooless summer. I also saw the very first swallow of the year on Wednesday, so whatever the weather is doing (big black clouds and rainless thunder at the moment), spring is definitely here. Hoorah!!!
A very happy, warm and peaceful Easter to you all.

I only heard a cuckoo once last year. I think they are becoming rare. I'm glad you heard it, but I wish they were not so cruel to other birds.
Happy Easter to you aswell Gattina :o)

Oh Meadow, how wonderful - I love them. They fly over in quite large groups here every now and then, making their funny, hissing little calls. Such beautiful colouring, too.

Cuckoos have found a system that works for them, Hywal, and that's all natural selection needs - though I wonder how that system evolved; were there other types that didn't make it because they chose the wrong hosts?

It amazes me that the foster parents don't realise that Junior isn't theirs - I've sen pics of a young cuckoo so hig it sits ON the nest rather than IN it, and the comparatively tiny "parents" still wear themselves out feeding it. The size difference is so obvious ... to us.

Happy Easter Gattina, no cuckoos around here for a very long time but did hear one last May when out walking the dog, only about 5miles from town, I was ecstatic,lol...

I heard the cuckoo on Saturday, it was in Suffolk.

He's been cucking and cooing very weakly today, but the weather has turned really bad again, with sleet this afternoon. He could be changing his mind and packing his bags if it doesn't improve soon.
