I like this very much & have added it to my favourites! In fact I've just written a blog on my Amaryllis flowering during 2015.

Very beautiful! I'm not sure if they'll bloom outside here in San Diego this year. It's been too hot and dry this winter.

@Delonix: Amaryllis will grow in the heat as I grew them for many years in Spain where the weather, in summer at least, is hot & dry. Of course mine growing in pots & with many other plants (also in pots) got all the water they could have wanted. I've never grown them in soil in the ground & left them to the "tender" mercies of the local weather.
The only time I ever grew them in the soil outdoors was on Gerry's allotment about 5 years ago. The weather here wasn't particularly hot & dry that year & I did water them from time to time & also fertilized them. Unfortunately many got infected with Narcissus Fly & looked poorly during the summer.

Balcony:
Yes, Amaryllis species tolerate very hot weather; however, it doesn't like extreme drought. We're having very hot weather now, up to 92ºF (33ºC) and we're in an extreme drought (we haven't had any real rain since December). We're dealing with a severe 4 year drought. Typically, Amaryllis grows and blooms in winter here outside.

I've noticed they can survive a very long time before dying down without receiving any water for months, literally! I stop watering my plants at the end of August & yet on some plants the leaves can continue into January!
This year I cut all their leaves off a couple of cm from the bulb neck in the middle of November, I'd never done this before & was a little apprehensive of the consequences but thought commercial growers cut the leaves off before packaging them & yet they flower perfectly well when potted up again so why shouldn't mine? They are starting to flower now. During February I had 5 bulbs in flower - till last week at least! This week they have been joined by a further 4 - all reds though. Yet the pot with the White with red feathering has another two bulbs in it & now they are about to open their flowers. The first stem still hasn't finished as 2 of the 4 flowers still look quite good! :-))
In the kitchen & two bedrooms there are more bulbs waiting to come into the living room as well!
