Fritillary open now
6 comments
These have opened up in the warmth, fritillary, growing in dappled fairly dry shade.
Once I had some white ones in there but this year they seem to have gone AWOL
They are gradually spreading & self seeding, but lily beetles & slugs take some every year
Best I could do for close up, bending is a problem for me so it has to be arm’s length & auto focus
Bit better
Plus, while out in garden I spotted a Bombylius major, I admit I had to search to find it’s “proper name”
Commonly known as bee fly, or long nosed bee

The pattern on the petals amazes me every time I see them. Could I start them in pots in a shady spot later this year?
Sympathise that you can't get down for their close-ups, maybe there's a selfie stick or remote control that would make things easier?

D8, worth a try in pots, but over the decades of trying to grow them in various gardens I've found they either thrive or curl up & die
For years I looked in envy at the swathes of them in gardens & NT places I visited
This garden they like, always worth a try as with most gardening

Nice to see these.
Sometimes I also get white ones in my garden but they only seem to last one year.
