Weeds & non gardeners

Talking about weeds, my Tom was being unusually helpful & got out a load of couch grass that had appeared in amongst the hellebores, then he spied a single Herb Robert /Stinky Bob in one of the troughs & pulled it out.
Unfortunately, he didn’t realise that he also pulled out my very lovely clematis, Early Sensation (I suppose the leaf shape is a bit similar).
It didn’t do much last year, this year it had one single stem with half a dozen flower buds on the end, I was so pleased it had made it through the winter.
I went right through the bin to find it, it was almost at the bottom, just the stem was there so I’m hoping the bulk of root is still there in the trough & maybe it will shoot again but being an evergreen I’m not that hopeful.

This blog resonates so much with me as my OH seems in the same league as your Tom! Doesn't touch anything in the garden until a fit of 'helpfulness' results in a clean sweep of everything. Remember digging through the discard heap for my Arum Lilies which got the treatment. Now you don't want to discourage a non-gardener, but you have to keep an eye on them and my OH hates being spied on when he's in the garden. I hope your clematis is OK - mine recovered from a clean up by OH!!

My hubby is just the same,he dug a rose out for me,but my platycoden went as well, and I did like that one.He does like to help, but he says himself he doesn't know a plant from a weed.
Good luck with your clematis Greenfingers.

Fingers crossed (green fingers) for your clematis

fingers crossed too. my OH pulled dead lily stems in the autumn despite asking him to cut the stems. several L. pardalinum bulbs attached to stems went into the compost bin. needless to say they were removed and put into puts.
I wonder what he would do if I polished his bikes with the same lack of care that he uses in the garden? [not that I would as they are worth a lot of pennies].

It's a shame Tom pulled up your Clematis but it may well sprout again from the root left in the ground. Another good reason to plant Clematis deeply! ?

I do hope it survives, its quite possible!

May be a bit late because of the weather. Keep hoping.

Hope your Clematis survives its mishap. OHs should be confined to the garage.

Haha Siris, you're right there.

Plants have a miraculous way of hanging on to life so I'm sure your clematis will do splendidly, Greenfinger. Talk to it, and perhaps have a quiet word with Tom. :O)

Oh Siris and Eirlys you do make me laugh.

I was cross & couldn't believe he didn't even see it then again he did do a good job of tidying up around the hellebores & the clem was small.
Years ago, I did the same thing myself, I was pulling on a tuft of grass not realising I had hold of a stem as well - the whole thing broke off at the base never to be seen again.
I was fuming with myself!

You all seem to have ended up with the wrong partners. I'm so glad Beryl enjoys the garden and wish she could still come out there with me.

You have a point there, Hywel, maybe prospective partners should come with their cv's.

lol :D

well my OH cv did say keen gardener and in the early days he was a keen veg grower etc. he was the one that wanted pond and fish. Over the years he has lost interest in the actual growing and maintenance has become gadgets and time saving. but hey ho.

Hywel.... we are both passionate gardeners, which is a good thing, otherwise we would have been divorced years ago!!

We are the lucky few DD :D

You certainly are. Hope Beryl improves when the weather warms up.

I suppose Tom meant well. Some people are just not gardeners. We are all different. I wouldn't like to help someone with anything mechanical. It would be a disaster !
I hope your clematis survives.
