changes to help flooding

GARDEN CHANGES
My front entrance, which is an access point for another house unfortunately, gets flooded regularly and we have to paddle through inches of water to get into house and it has even risen as high as the door on a few occasions.
So enough is enough….
slabs which had been laid by the council many years ago with thick polythene under them [which caused a huge problem with drainage ] were lifted and relaid on top of ones at the door to create steps so that we could get in and out without paddling lol
the thick polythene was cut out and disposed of ,lining put down and stones which we had left over from another project were put on top.
I now have muscles that I didn,t have before lol but am pleased with the change.
the slabs and path need a really good bleach clean now [when the weather improves !!! ] and the stones are a lovely light grey colour when dry.
I am very pleased with the look of it as well as the fact that the water now drains away far quicker
other photos i had of flooding wouldnt upload but as you can see 10 slabs were removed with 6 used to heighten steps.
Very pleased with the look and also no puddles at door during very heavy downpour a few days ago so job well done lol

It looks very good, and much more sensible! Should stop the worry now whenever it rains

What a great improvement it looks a very inviting area now, a job well done worth a few aching limbs.

thanks everybody. It looks so much more inviting now,I don,t know why I didn,t do this years ago because I ve hated these slabs since day 1 .
the thick polythene was doubled for some reason??? too so no wonder there was no escape for the water.
Having to have access point for neighbour is a bugbear too or I would have tried to get rid of tarmac path too lol
hope you are right about no more rain Lizziebee lol :-)

That is a very sensible solution, Helen. It looks good as well.

Helen that does look so much better and it has made a nice pleasing feature, one which will soak up all the water too, well done. I like all your pots.

What a great improvement Helen...well done! I think WLC are worse than CEC for doing things the wrong way. My brother lives along in Ecclesmachan and he is constantly having a battle with them over doing jobs properly!!
I do hope that now you have done this wee job you have chased the rain away :))
The whole area and your display of different containers is very nice :)

What a difference you have made to your front entrance. I do think it was very sensible to use 2 slabs as the width because too often steps can be more of a hazard than a help. I like the fact that the steps are only one (2") high as steps can be a real access problem for folk who are not too fit. I like your pots too especially the wheelbarrow.

thanks, I was worried that people would trip on them as they came in but no problems [so far anyway
Like you say though access is great now :-)]

Well done Helen - why on earth did the council use polythene under those slabs? not surprised you were paddling. Much more opportunity for drainage with your new layout, as well as keeping your feet dry. Looks good too.
PS - meant to say I like the little wheelbarrow...
