Gymnocalycium pflanzii

Gymnocalycium pflanzii is a cactus from Bolivia, Paraguay and North of Argentina.
It grows in deep rich soil, in sunny rocky areas, on slopes or under spiny shrubs.
It is named in honour of K Pflanz – but I can’t find out who this is :(
I’ve had this cactus for several years, and this year it produced one bud, which made me feel quite excited lol
so I had to put it in a blog :o)
Here’s the flower opening from a bud :-
It is rather a strange looking flower, but I’ve waited a long time to see it …
and guess what – I love it ! :o)

Its a beautiful flower Hywel and the cactus is strangely beautiful too, although the spines look rather sharp.

The spines bend backwards, so not really able to hurt you much even though they are quite pointy :o)

Lovely photos of a lovely flowering cactus, Hywel! Funny it should like rich deep soil, I thought all cacti liked poor soil.
