I belong to an art group who meet in a local town on Monday Mornings, Tuesday afternoons and Thursday evenings,
(but I only go to the evening one occasionally)

They’re friendly people, and there’s no teacher there, you just arrive when you want, leave when you want, and paint/draw whatever you want, so there’s no pressure, it’s very relaxed :)

Last week they had an open day in their studio and people’s paintings were displayed on the walls all around, and there were hand made cards, prints etc for sale.

There was a corner for children to draw and paint and there was tea coffee and cakes for whoever wanted them.
We had a good turnout and a few new members joined so it was all a success.

Three of my ‘works’ were on display too
(although I didn’t think they were very good, but I had my arm twisted)
I’ve shown two of them below but I haven’t got a photo of the third one

This is an old church I painted with watercolour pencils. It’s on a remote hillside near here …
(I think I’ve shown it to you before)

I did this portrait of an ancestor in graphite pencils and although it isn’t finished they wanted it as a ‘work in progress’

I’ve done a bit more to the portrait since I had it back but it still isn’t finished properly, especially the background, there’s still a lot to do to it …
Here it is so far :-

Her name is Ann Jenkins -
and she’s my 3x great grandmother

What a brilliant idea for a class! I seem to have got out of painting and didn't want to go to a teaching class which most of them are.
I love your paintings and the second one is amazing.
You are very talented Hywel.

How lovely to have that sort of Art class near to you Hywel...no pressure at all....love your portrait...well-done.

Glad you found some like-minded people near you, Hywel! You are very good at art whereas I'm so bad that my grandkids laugh when I try to do any kind of drawing!

That is a really good copy of your ggg grandmother, you & the others at your art class are very talented. There are a
lot of art groups in this area where people just go & do their own thing. I just go to a hobbies group, a sort of knit& natter! Some knit, chrochet, make cards or colour etc. we try unsuccessfully to cut down on the biscuits!

Thank you all for your supportive comments, they give me confidence (something of which I have very little)

I don't need a teaching class either Rose so I'm glad I found this one. I'm sorry you don't paint now, and actually I have found it a help to paint more after joining this group. It's a pity there isn't something similar near you.

Hobbies group sounds interesting Feverfew, I wouldn't mind a class like that myself. Actually one person in the art group was talking about it not long ago.

having a place just to 'be' is brilliant. I have a couple of quilting groups that are not teacher based, though we do swop ideas and skills.

your artistry is beautiful Hywel. Cant draw to save my life, though I love colouring in!

I'm the same as you, SBG! If I have to draw anything it had better be all straight lines! If it is it might be recognizable! 🤣

It does sound the perfect class, Hywel! Flexible and friendly. It's lovely to meet new friends and share your fantastic art skills and works.
It seems to be a place for people of all ages, nurturing everyone's interest and passion, even the youngsters!
Your representation of your ancestor is amazing! I do hope you continue to enjoy this class, Hywel! I attend yoga classes and sound bath sessions, I've met lovely new friends and it's very therapeutic too.

I think it is a wonderful idea to have a group of people with the same interest gather together. We have some groups here as well. The display events are quite popular. We also have a lots of talented indigenous people around here.

I always admired your talent Hywel.

Thank you all ...

I went to something like a sound bath once Kate, it was a meditation group and one day the person in charge brought some large bowls (can't remember what they were called) and they made a sound when a 'thing' (don't know the name of that either) was moved around their edges. It was an interesting experience but it made me cry a lot.

Hywel we've been telling you for years that you are a brilliant artist and these two works prove it, you certainly don't need a teacher but I bet you could become one.... I'm pleased you have somewhere to go, it looks and sounds just the kind of meeting you would feel relaxed at once you got to know the people and made a few friends, I understand about lacking confidence as I don't mix well with people I don't know...I've said before and I'm afraid its true, I don't have a single creative skill at all, I used to love writing stories when I was a kid and was good at that but I'm afraid that got lost over the years and I never took it up again not even as a hobby.....

Thanks Sue, maybe you should take up writing stories again, it would be a nice thing to do in the winter x

Hywel, I know you mean, the singing bowls. Sometimes, they bring a large gong along too. It's a odd one, but, yes, they do evoke emotions during the sessions. I find them quite therapeutic.
Hope your art class has continued to give you pleasure.

Yes it is thanks Kate, however I've decided to take a week off lol, sometimes I need my own space for a while.

27 Sep, 2024

I fully agree. We all need some "me" time.

Lincslass perhaps you should consider taking up gardening if you have no other talents! 🤣 As I have no other talents like you that's what I do! 🤣

There are some talented people in your group, including you. Love your work. I wish I had such a talent.

Thank you all :)

You should have confidence in yourself Hywel because you are very talented.
Sue, your garden is your talent!
