My allotment update (Feb 13 2010)

Well I haven’t been down to the allotment for a couple of weeks now so I thought I had better show my face! What with being poorly, hospital appointments and the ‘orrible weather we’ve had I thought they might have thought I had given up!
The last time I was there I dug a trench for my beans and a small bed for summer salad (lettuce, beetroot, radish etc.)
These first two photos show what condition the plot was in when I was down there last and the next shows how it looked at four ‘o’ clock this afternoon!
If you can see the old bean stalks from last year in the first photo (Beyond the carrier bag “flags”) well that is where the weed membrane goes to now.
I’m not digging this over as you might expect, I’ve decided to use a “no dig” approach. This means that I will be adding lots of manure (and my home made compost!) in the autumn and hoeing any weeds off as they appear. While things are growing this year I will be planning raised beds for next!
Raised beds will make it easier for me to keep the weeds down and will make planting and harvesting much easier on my old back. They also mean I can’t walk on the soil and compress it, thus saving me from digging it again.
Well that’s all for this instalment, I shall be down there again over the next week as Holly is off school for half term and I will have to find something to keep her occupied! She had a whale of a time today, digging holes and generally getting filthy dirty. Carol was with us and she even had a go at digging but unfortunately spent more time on her bum than standing up!

The soil looks nice and crumbly, Ian. You have all done well to get so far already. Hope you have a good half-term and that the weather is good to you :)

Great work there - special compliments to your under-gardeners!

Thank you all,
SBG, the forecast is for rain increasing all next week!
HW, I do sympathise with you, I know USA as a whole is suffering badly this year with snow.
Gee, The soil is excellent. It had a good layer of manure dug in last year!
Spritz, I think they had a great time, even Carol was laughing when she kept falling over while trying to dig!

aww poor you,, its after not gardening over winter ian, its hell first time out again ;o)

Take care to not over do it, Ian! (Though it sounds like my advice may have come a little late!)
I like your idea of the No Digging approach! I had thought of the same idea myself & the bit about raised beds. I have to be very careful with my back - it's stiff at the best of times. I don't want to go through another repetition of the sciatica I had for a few months last year ever again in my life!!!
14 Feb, 2010
Your not wrong San. They say you never forget how to ride a bike but I know for sure that if I tried it now it would hurt like h..l tomorrow. Lol
Balcony, I wouldn't do anything that is likely to set sciatica off, I've heard it's one of the most painful things you can suffer from so take your own advice and pace yourself!

Slow and easy will do it..it is spring like here Ian..Our little corner of the USA has been warmer than normal since the end of December..but for us not so abnormal..we are very sheltered here...other areas in our same rain shadow are having fits with the early buds on tulips because the Tulip Festival is not slated until April...big trouble for the organizers...too bad they can not seem to organize Mother Nature..lol...I think THEY need to be flexible. lol..Your work looks great.. :o)
16 Feb, 2010
Lucky you Cat, Lol. It's f-f-f-f-freezing cold here again!
I'm just doing a bit at a time and then leaving it a while until my old bones stop aching! ;~))
16 Feb, 2010
What a great difference, Ian! Well-done! That's good you can work at your allotment so early..it's February now! :), we still have much snow...
Take care!

It hailed on Henry and me this morning, Ian. Not for long before it turned to rain, but definite hailstones. :-(((
16 Feb, 2010
Thanks Uma, we are lucky with our weather really!
Sorry Spritz, I know it hailed on you today but generally we don't have it bad considering we're on the latitude as Canada (Or is it longitude?) Lol Obviously geography wasn't top of my list at school either!
16 Feb, 2010
Well just these last couple of months it seems like were having the weather they wished they had in Canada, for the games.
