Crete - flowers and butterflies

A visit to Crete last week was memorable – we have never visited in the autumn before – so we had never seen the autumn bulbs before – we stayed about 18k from Chania – so quiet and peaceful and we walked pretty much all day – every day – the big one was the Imbros Gorge – we have walked it a good few years back including the Samaria Gorge – but that was then and this is now – however we came through it unscathed!!
Here are a few picsThe beaches stretched forever
The swallow tail butterflies were so beautiful – this one was on a Viburnum I think
this one was overcome by the bougainvillea – what a gorgeous pink who could blame him !
I had downloaded walks from the internet before we went
and they were really accurate – this one took us through these ancient olive groves
Absolutely essential in a Greek Salad a favouite of mine
This the monastery at Kolimbari at the foot of the Rodopos peninsula – we walked to Alfrato about 5 km on and the pictures following are a few of the bulbs that we saw -
Not sure which variety they were – no labels!!
These little bulbs were surviving against all odds – herds of goats were grazing the area – perhaps they are not palatable to goats
I am not sure what these were only that they were crocus – they were on the roadside and stretched a fair way – well established
Pomegranites – spelling ?
This is a pic for all you shed lovers out there – this one was on top of the house roof – space well utilised you might say !!
Kolymbari
we would return – this week I am planting up the window boxes – and front pots – splitting my sieboldii primulas and drenching my flamboyant begonias for vine weevil this week – planting bulbs – tidying borders the list goes on – have a good week – Jane- 28 Oct, 2015

Brian I thought of you when I saw them - they were amazing I could have sat down and cried they were so beautiful - Crete has moved on since we were last there - new roads -tarmac and little care for the flora and fauna or so it would seem - but amidst it all - and against all odds - there they were standing proud - in their natural environment - a cloud of colour - Jane

It looks really lovely Jane and so peaceful, the monastery on the hill with the cart at the bottom reminded me of a scene from the Spaghetti Westerns of many years ago, I like the little harbours but not sure about the siting of the shed, don't fancy carrying my tools up there, lol, thankyou for sharing...

Lincslass - I seem to have a permanent war with the weeds - you know you pull one up and turn around and another one pops up !! - Steragram - those swallow tails were everywhere - they were so graceful - there were others too - a large blue - a sort of red admiral only more orange than red - and a large yellow - and lots of white ones like our woodland white - best wishes to you both - Jane

Jane lovely photos wish I could have seen them.
The cyclamen are Hederifolium, the Crocus are Sternbergia Lutea most likely.
