avocado

hi guys, just thought i would see if anyone has tried rooting the stone out of an avocado pear..i am trying it out with info from the internet..

pointed side up ..stick 4 cocktail sticks round the middle bit

put in dish with water so half the stone is submerged..change water every 2 days..sorry about the quality of pic but you get my drift..

it says on the net ..in about 2-3 weeks the stone will wrinkle & split open top & bottom, after 3-4 weeks a tap root should emerge at base of stone, leave to establish its roots, when bearing leaves it can be planted in a 50-50 blend of topsoil & coir (coconut fibre ) any fruits from this will not be edible.
this is the stone after one day it is already splitting as i hope you can see..

this is the second day ..Tues 1st Feb it is coming along quicker than i thought it would..

i thought i would just give it a try..see how it goes.

I like to experiment with things as well! I'm well known for sticking seeds of fruit in pots - mostly nothing ever comes of them but I have had a few orange or lemon or tangerine pips become plants but I always lost them at some time.

I've grow Conkers on several occasions as well. In fact I have a little tree from last year, still dormant, from a Pink Horsechestnut tree that I hope will sping to live shortly!

i do the same Balcony, last summer i planted a pear pip & it grew quite well to about 8 inches then lost all its leaves suddenly.. i hope it will still be ok.never thought of growing conkers.. hmm..i hope yours is ok :o)

Had lovely bushy plants, although I have to admit it was a squirrel that got me started by planting one for me that came up and then I thought I would try! Started them off too late though I think as didn't get any peanuts! Will try again...

I seem to remember that they will only grow in warm soil so there's no point in sowing them for another couple of months.

I've taken a couple of handfuls down the the allotment - just hope I don't feel peckish one day before I plant them! LOL!

8 Feb, 2011

lol Balcony,i have them in the spare bedroom in soil with fine sand as were the instructions..are you going to plant them on the plot ?

8 Feb, 2011

Yes, but first I shall plant them in small pots in the green house so that they get off to a good start when I plant them out! I think that won't be before the middle of May. Last year there was a frost that killed people's runner beans & potato tops at the beginning of May.

oooh thats not good is it ? i dont think these i planted are doing anything, i may have a look in one of the pots in a few days..

The allotment field is a frost pocket as it's in a hollow. Some parts of it are up to about a metre below the surroundings. It seems it was a gravel pit many years ago & then the extraction ceased. obviously not profitable enough. The when they did the the extension to the A1 road just 5 miles from here they dumped a lot of the ground in the pit & then covered it with a foot of topsoil & rented it out for allotments.

They didn't raise the ground to the height of the surrounding land or the soil subsided over time. When we moved here from London in 1966 the allotment field was as we still see it today, minus the big shed that sold gardening supplies.

We had the first frost of the autumn only on the allotment field, everything else in the surrounding streets got another 2 weeks of grace before the first frost killed everything off.

blimey you have to watch out then if thats how it is .Our allotments are on an old site that used to be a brick works of some sort & was covered with soil too..so you can imagine what is under there ..:o)

Just over 30 cm down it's just gravel & sand! I know as I dug out quite a few roots of Horseradish & I got down to below my elbows trying to dig out as much root as possible! Even then I seldom got out all the root as they continued down into the sandy subsoil! Nevertheless I hope those I did get most of the root out won't make a comeback this year! If they do they will find Roundup waiting for them!

We need to get manure or compost into the soil but can't seem to find any in this part of the country! Gerry has tried a couple of places but with no results.

lol at roundup..hope the roots dont come back,we are lucky with manure as we have a few places to get it from ..one lady (not far away)has a few horses & has about 5 heaps of it all in different stages & its free..i thought you could buy it from B&Q but maybe not..
