Severe pruning of the solanum crispum glasnevin.

Our ‘Chilean potato vine’ had become a mass of green leaves and not so much flower this past month. It was like a non stop growing monster. OH was reluctant to take the electric hedge trimmer to it..but, I was insistent it was out of control and the leaf drop on a very small, very ‘bijou’ patch of lawn looked untidy.
Anyway, it has gone from 12 feet to an inch of its life! We filled the brown bin and eventually 3 garden bags too.
We shall see how it looks next spring. I will ensure that it is maintained to a nice shape and size. OH liked it before the ‘chop’. It’s his favourite plant as it’s a long flowering vine. It is a very pretty, wildlife friendly plant, but needs controlling in a small garden.

Thanks everyone! I couldn’t believe how much came off! It was never ending! OH thinks I’m trying to get rid of it. I’m not sure if I like the vine anymore. Maybe it just frustrates me when it suddenly shoots up a few feet in a couple of weeks and it drops old leaves all the time. I think if we just keep it at a nice size and it’s easy for me to prune independently, it’ll be fine. It definitely wasn’t ‘by halves’ Julia! And Bloomer, it definitely had a drastic haircut! ☺️

it looks a good structure , if it makes you feel better at work I was told to prune down the grape vine that was huge , chopped it completely off , it came back very strong !

Kate, they don't die off easily at all. I used to visit an elderly lady who had one of these overhanging a horse drinking trough (Listed building so not allowed to remove the trough!).
It grew so big that lots of it fell into the trough so OH and I cut it right back, almost falling in the water at the time! Needless to say it grew back strongly the following year ... :o)

that will spring back to life next year no problems.

my hubby has just done the same to a winter flowering clematis as he doesn't like it growing up the chimney. casualties include a rambling rose, two daphnes and Clematis bill McKenzie into the bargain grrrr.

Drastic but necessary, bet come next spring you will be glad you did it.

Thanks Paul, Shirley, Eileen and Stroller. Appreciate the advice and anecdotes. All welcomed.
Shirley, it seems like this plant gives us a tough time trying to maintain it - seems like you both had a really difficult task there!
Eileen, I’ll bet you’re not best pleased with the ‘casualty numbers’, especially such pretty ones!

I'm surprised it grew so big, I have always had difficulty with this plant. I bought another one this year and I'm going to keep it in a pot so that I can put it in shelter during the winter months.
I hope it grows back nicely for you next year :)

I love this plant, Kate. I had a white one years ago and it grew like yours, way up the wall of our bungalow. I'll keep my fingers crossed for yours. I have one now, like Hywel, pampered in a pot 'till I can find a home for it here!

Thanks Hywel, OH is hoping it grows back well too! It seems to flourish every year, growing massively. I’m wondering why you’ve had difficulty with it? Hopefully your potted one thrives..

Thanks Ange, I’ve seen the white one too, the flowers are so pretty and they have longevity for months - this is the upside to it! Hope you find a nice spot for your new one!

Thank you Klahanie! It was quite a rewarding task. Look forward to seeing your pics of your walnut tree.

It kinda looked like me before my haircut. Now I feel like a million bucks. Nice job!

Thanks Paul! It was good exercise! I’m pleased you’ve enjoyed your trip to the barber! Was it short back and sides?
Thanks Dawn! I’d like to prune it more..much more!☺️

lol Kate 😆

I quit going to the barber years ago My hair grows like crab grass. I'd have to go a couple times per month at $50.00/visit. I can do it myself and usually go for the GI cut - high and tight. Saves lots of time, money and I can do it at home. Not only do I feel like a million bucks, I must have saved a million bucks on gas, haircuts, tips, parking and Starbucks coffee and I can make my coffee at home too, lol!

Sometimes it just has to be done.......OH has just done the same to our cream Akebia.....I am sure both will be up and running again next year!

Sometimes you just have to cut back even though it might seem a bit drastic, I've found with lots that they reward you by growing even stronger the next year...

Thanks for the tips and reassurance Dd and Lincslass.
Paul - you’re definitely saving a gazillion dollars! I could learn a lot - apart from the home haircut!

Kate, I was intending to prune mine but the wind on Friday
25th beat me to it. It blew it so hard against the trellis fence that it snapped off, low down, through the thick stem. I wasn't planning on such a drastic trim! I'm quite sure it will bounce back though. Yesterday I took it all to the local council tip, so all pruned & dealt with in one fell swoop. I t was laden with blossom for months & the birds love hopping about in it. I wonder if they wonder when things suddenly disappear.

Hi Josee, goodness! It’s amazing what wind can do, so destructive at times. What a task for you though. I have to agree, ours was full of little flowers but it had put so much into growing and growing and became quite tall and awkward.
I’m pretty sure it will grow back for you next year. Not sure if yours is like mine - it has shoots sprouting through the warmer months from the trunk and stem areas lower down? I think our birds were a bit confused as they like the cover of it when they are swooping down to one of the feeders hanging from it!
