Took several snaps yesterday and today of some of the ferns in the garden waking up gradually – all at different times – some later this Spring than the norm.
Ferns are one of my most favourite plants! I find it hard to resist a fern..from the unfurling to the outstretched fronds in full architectural beauty…lush!
It was warm and glorious yesterday, it has been raining today – albeit light drizzle…starting to brighten up now at 4pm.

Lovely fern collection. They look so fresh and I love how you’ve planted them amongst the rocks.

Thank you kindly, Amsterdam. I do like the effect of the cobbles against the green of the ferns.

You have a great selection. I like the pic with the frond in front of the Hosta.

Thanks Sue, I think you’re right, some ferns seem to remain quite untouched by winter. I have 2 tree ferns, we’ve been very lucky with them..so far!

Thanks kindly, Sue. I’m pleased you like that pic...me trying to be artistic!☺️

They're quite magical, the way they come unrolled like that.

You can't be cross with a fern...(unless its bracken...)

well you succeeded in your artistry Kate.
Ferns are one of my favourite groups too. Their biology is amazing.

They sure are, Sue! I think they are pretty magical too, I love the unfurling process! I appreciate bracken is definitely debatable.

Aw thank you, Eileen. That’s a really kind comment, thanks again! I have to agree that the biology of the fern is really amazing - plus you definitely have the knowledge and experience there!

Never having had a garden where I could get them to grow well, I appreciate the various forms in yours. Maybe one day I will have the right conditions. Lovely collection, Kate.

They're beautiful, I like them best when they're at that stage :)

Thank you, Ange. I’m pleased you like the pics. I’d have lots more ferns ( or a fernery ) if I had a bigger garden!
Think if you’ve a shady corner or a shady spot under a tree they do fairly well.

Aw thank you, Hywel! Very kind of you. Me too, love this stage. ☺️

I love ferns, its fascinating to see them unfurling, makes me think of fairies and pixies, yep I know its soft but I'm still a kid at heart, I find them magical..

Oh no, I agree with you Sue! ...and thank you! Yes, definitely something ancient and magical about ferns..😊

Kate, I love your Fern collection and will now tell you that I have just the one! I planted it in 2016 and I swear it's smaller now than it was then.
It's a Dryopteris filix-mas 'Linearis Polydactyla' (that doesn't roll off the tongue easily!) and IS still alive but not thriving. Any advice for it to grow up a bit bigger?

Thank you kindly, Shirley!!! I thought you’d have more ferns. Not sure why! You’ve such a variety of plants in your garden. I have many ferns mostly in semi shade. My tree ferns get quite a lot of sunshine - oddly! I tend to water, water and water, more so in the warmer months. They are so thirsty. Plus, I remove the fronds in March, leaving them without any greenery. The croziers or fiddleheads will be nice and tight, preparing to unfurl. That’s about it, really, Shirley. But watering often is the key. 😊

Thanks Kate, I just read that it's also known as Shield Fern and thrives in mossy conditions. That may explain why it doesn't grow well as it's too dry in the current position. I shall heed your advice and keep it damp.

I love your fern collection, Kate. I have 13, many of the ones that you have. Last winter they all died down & at last are uncurling again. Most winters they have stayed green the whole time, even the non native ones & I trim off the old leaves in Spring. The Maidenhair fern spreads & has to be kept in check. This winter the frost killed the first growth but it it soon pops back. I don't have a tree fern, alas!

Josee, thank you kindly!!! Apologies I missed your lovely compliment. Sounds like you’re a fern aficionado! Thank you for some extra info, it’s well appreciated! 👍
