Sloe berries on the blackthorn.

Noticed several sloe berries dotted on the blackthorn yesterday, just behind the recently pruned ceanothus.
Not nearly enough to start making gin however!
I’m sure they must have been growing there before, I guess I hadn’t realised, maybe they are starting to thrive now or my pruning has been harsher on the ceanothus this year!

That’s a good tip, Eileen! I’ll get my little ladder out ready to climb up methinks! 🍸

Its a good year for berries, I remember when my dad was still with us collecting berries for him to make his wine with, my favourite was always his Elderberry..

The only time we made elderberry we bottled it to soon and it blew up in the pantry. Smelt of incontinent cats in there for weeks...

Paul, I’ve some blackberries too - although we try to get rid of ‘brambles’ where can on the bund! My neighbour’s grow lots of fruit and veg.
I first tried gin a couple of Christmas’ ago - it was OH’s inter from Devon who’d brought up her homemade sloe gin.
It was very Christmassy, but a little like cough mixture!

Sue, I’ve never tried elderberry wine, only cordial. I’ll bet it was very pleasant! Good memories for you too….

We made Sloe wine once, it was nice and the small was lovely when it was fermenting. Maybe you'll have enough to do that one year Kate :)

Sounds lovely, Hywel! A bonus that the fermenting process smells quite nice too! I’ll give this some thought, hopefully next year we may see a nice crop!!!! 😉
