Not 100% on pics 3 or 5 but all are garden worthy in the right situation.

1 wild or dog rose
2 hypericum
3 portuguese laurel
4 geranium
5 spirea or pieris

19 Jun, 2012

thanks very much dgw!
the hypericum, ill have to look out for the yellow flowers as i havent seen any yet :-) the 3rd obne is actually just between 2 spotted laurel-think its the same thing maybe its a baby one?
ooh im glad ive got a geranium-cuttings!! :-)

19 Jun, 2012

Agree absolutely with 1 to 4, but wonder if perhaps 5 might be a variety of Berberis?

19 Jun, 2012

I too agree 1 - 4 and not sure on 5. I think Oji may have it right :)

19 Jun, 2012

They're all pretty. I hope they flower for you :o)

20 Jun, 2012

The Geranium is G. sanguineum. It stays close to the ground and has pretty magenta flowers. The Hypericum looks like a native plant, but pretty none the less. I have it on my stream bank and it flowers for ages, then gets berries.

Is the last plant prickly? Berberis are, so you can tell if it is that easily.

thanks everyone.
so pic 3 is aucuba japonica like i have others of but younger?
spritz its not so prickly to not handle i reckon it would be if it was to get bigger and maturer, its not grown hugely in last two years hmm!
ill put that last one on as a questin see if anyone knows
:-)

20 Jun, 2012

well they have all helped you out well Leigh :) I am always impressed when people know the real names of geraniums like SpritzHenry does but she has lots and really likes them...go peep at her lovely garden :)

20 Jun, 2012

I thought the last one looked a bit like red robin but thats not prickly......

20 Jun, 2012

Actually, looking at pic 3 again, with the slightly serrated edges to the leaves, could it be Forsythia?

20 Jun, 2012

That was my first thought, Ojib. I also think the last shrub might be a Spirea.

20 Jun, 2012

yes pimp i love spritzs garden! thanks :-)
ive searched all these names everyones suggesting for the 5th but none seem just right. the closest ive seen was spirea gold mount but i dont think ive ever seen flowers on it.
as for the berberis its not that because i found i have 2 of those on the back garden 'darwinii' which i never knew the name of but same again ive seen flowers but never followed by berries- how strange
well its still open for debate hopefully ill find it because id like to move it but not upset it lol :-) thanks all

Right, im deciding the number 5 is pieris 'little heath green'. i think the spirea magic carpet is also close but ive never noticed flowers on it and the leaves just dont look right in some pics of it. ive been searching for it for days now so i dont care any more its pieris whether it likes it or not lol :o)

24 Jun, 2012

Errr...have you got acid soil? Pieris wouldn't thrive unless you have.

26 Jun, 2012

im not sure yet spritz. i havent got round to testing it yet !

26 Jun, 2012

Have you (or your near neighbours) got any Rhodos, Camellias or Azaleas? They all like acid soil. A clue! :-))

27 Jun, 2012

i just googled and i didnt recognize any of those to be in next doors-she has a lovely garden, tho the rhodos are everywhere in our park down the road. i took some cuttings a few month ago but left them outside and forgot about them. she has hydrangea and peonies in her garden but theyre the only ones i havent got apart from the annuals she has.
when i get round to it ive seen the liquid testers and a mechanical one that you stick in the ground. duno which is best but the mechanical one has different settings on it to tell you different things :o)

27 Jun, 2012

Could it be a nandina?:-)

28 Jun, 2012

I don't think so, Ba. Wrong shaped leaves. :-(

If you have lots of Rhodos near you, it's likely you have acid soil, but not definite because of strata....ao you'll need to do a simple test. The cheap test-tube one is fine for a quick and easy check!

29 Jun, 2012

So frustrating isn't it...I know that plant quite well, unfortunately my memory retrieval mechanism seems to be somewhat faulty at the moment lol:-)

29 Jun, 2012

What colour are your neighbours Hydrangeas Leigh?

29 Jun, 2012

Hi all! b.again i thought it could have been just then but when i clicked a closer view the leaves edges are too smooth, and im not sure it has berries. thank you.
thanks spritz. i will get the liquid tester then.
well now you ask about the colour annella, im not certain they are hydrangeas unless theyre just not in bloom yet because what i thought were the flowers are a greeney-yellow ??
:-)

30 Jun, 2012

Lol Leigh...now you're just teasing:-) Hydrangea flowers are often that colour before they open properly...foiled again Annella ...good thinking though lol:-)

30 Jun, 2012

Teasing lol? no i really am that amateur! yeh im sure they were pink and blue last year -ill take a pic ! :o)

30 Jun, 2012

Lol Leigh, that's even worse. Annella was asking about the colour of your neighbour's hydrangeas because on acid soil hydrangeas are blue, and on alkali soil they're pink. We were hoping to say, in a very knowledgeable way .... ah blue flowers...your soil is acid or vice versa lol:-)

1 Jul, 2012

Lol maybe i dreamed it, havent been out to get a pic yet but theyre still yellow :-D

1 Jul, 2012

Maybe if the soil is neutral you get pink and blue:-)

1 Jul, 2012

good thinking! im really wanting to know what colour they are now lol. got new neighbours there yesterday, hope they look after the garden. i should go and ask for cuttings just in case lol :o)

1 Jul, 2012

Hi Leigh, the Hydrangeas will start to colour now so keep an eye on them. As Ba says, pink and blue mixed can happen on neutral soil.

2 Jul, 2012

Great im excited now lol, thanks anella :o)

2 Jul, 2012

Mind you if the Hydrangea is white there is no way of knowing, white is white whatever the soil!

2 Jul, 2012

Back to square 1:-)

2 Jul, 2012

Lol i just looked and they are going paler, they better not white after all this! :o)

2 Jul, 2012

THEYRE BLUE!! i dont think what i was looking at even is even hydrangea lmao but luckily the are some in her garden. theyre quite a purply blue tho! So acid it is then :o)) thanks for that guys!

10 Jul, 2012

Not really Leigh, Ive pink and purply on the same bush, some years one colour dominates and this year its pink with only a couple of purple......sometimes this shade is a rather grubby looking purple...... saw some recently that were a lovely baby blue and one bush a deepsky blue....beautiful.

10 Jul, 2012

Now look here Pam.........:-))

10 Jul, 2012

Hmmm! so the soil ph doesnt make difference to the colour? im starting to give up on this idea lol :o)

10 Jul, 2012

What's your soil type Pam?

10 Jul, 2012

http://www.gardeners.com/Growing-Blue-Hydrangeas/hydrangealp,default,pg.html

So depending on the type ie mopheads like my neighbours or lacecaps if the soil is acidic they will turn blue and vice-versa. if its a type that blooms only cream will stay cream regardless.
:o))
