What not to do in late December...

I was having a wander around on Christmas Day and noticed my water had stopped flowing in the fishpond, now I do not know about you but " NO WAY "was I tackling a filter cleaning job on that particular day, I dislike having to tackle that sort of job in the winter months at the best of times, I had to put it to the back of my mind, yesterday we were out visiting family so couldn’t possibly do anything then, muggins had to tackle it this morning..
Brrrrr!!!!
I discovered one of the water lilies, (of course it had to be the massive one) had entangled itself around the water pump, that had caused the pump to be lifted up off its plynth, all the grids had silted up on the outside, the pump was still working but no water was getting in, obviously not flowing through the filter, now getting the pump and lily separated was no mean feat especially on such a cold day but I have managed it, a few choice words were used but heigh ho !! nobody around to hear me, lol.. The pump has been cleaned of its nasty covering and is now back to working correctly, it has actually fallen over as I missed the plynth completely, I was certainly not diving into that water to locate said pump on such a cold day, it just means that we have no fountain at the moment, I can live without that for a few months, the water is flowing freely through the filter again, my water remains clear and my fish are happy…

As you can see I now have a huge hole in the netting but it was a case of needs must, I’ll have to send for a new one and get it put in place in the springtime, for now I have placed some canes across the pond to stop it sagging into the water, we have a lot of babies and I don’t want to chance any of them getting entangled in the netting, it looks a tad unsightly but that is a small price to pay, I like my fish healthy and safe..

I remembered to switch on the electrics in the shed that are connected to my top greenhouse, the heater was already in situ, its only on the freeze setting so won’t kick in unless Mr Jack Frost decides to visit our area, better to be safe than sorry, think that is my gardening done for 2018 unless something untoward happens…..Roll on next year and we’ll start it all again…..

Well top marks for making yourself do it - a very put-offable job I think. Hope you have the happy glow of a job well done!

Hi Stera, hope all is well with you, it had to be done, if left it would have ruined the pump and they are certainly not cheap to replace, I did feel pleased with myself when the water began to flow again but I'm keeping all fingers and toes xx that nothing happens to the setup again, until the warmer weather at least, playing in the pond is not good in December, lol.....

Yes not a job for this time of year, but that's a job well done lincs. pond is looking super and the fish look very healthy.
I had to get in the pond at the end of November to sort the pump. That was cold too. But all looking good at present.

Thankyou Seaburn, the joys of keeping fishponds, you have to keep check on them don't you and be prepared to brave the elements if it becomes necessary, hope you are fit and healthy again now..

Our pond also is covered over but haven't seen any fish. No more of the latter as the heron has had some expensive meals!
We have had very many tropical fish babies though!

Well done on getting the job done! Not a very pleasant job for an end of December day!

Are there any birds in your vicinity that might "help themselves" to your fish, through that hole in the netting? I hope not!

I hope that you cut off the electric to the pump before you started your job of clearing it Lincs.
