Hard week's work in the garden again...Part 2

It was well worth it though, some days were really hot so I worked early then retreated indoors, then out again after dinner….This was the state of play I was left with after removing my g’house…

It took me ages to remove that granite, it was packed solid, then the digging commenced, now that part was relatively easy, all around the edges was very soft, every year I’d added fresh compost for growing my toms, the hardest part was emptying the wheelbarrow around the garden in various places without spoiling my plants and shrubs, obviously the pathway was very hard going and choice words were used, I then discovered that although the wood had rotted the concrete foundations were intact, no way was I even attempting to remove all that lot, so I had a “Susie Moment” why not recycle it, lol…..

So I dug down..More choice words for the middle bit !!!

Then I added these..

I didn’t like the white pavers, they freaked me out but I slept on it… Now originally my intention was to leave my rose bushes until Nov/Dec, however the good weather changed my mind, why work in the cold and possibly wet conditions, moving those roses was not easy and yes choice words and sheer brute force and ignorance was used to dig them up, Oh !! I nearly forgot, I was wallowing in mud as well as I gave them all a good drink both before and after..

As you can see I did remove the white pavers, I’ve added Lavender and Campanula inside, Hardy Geraniums, various rockery plants, spreading sedums and alpine plants to the outer edges, they will soon spread out and scramble over the concrete, which will hide it and soften the look, I hope..

Removing the roses left me with an area to replant, I had to move some Michaelmas Daisies and Jananese Anenomes over the footpath to the long border, they were all tangled amongst the roses , they will look nice amongst the shrubs so didn’t mind

I’ve made a start filling in my bare patch by splitting my white Chrysanthemum, ( looking a tad wilted but will perk up after another drink) I need some red and bronze ones, methinks a visit to one of the GC’s is on the cards, transplanted Hellebore seedlings, now I need lots more new bulbs.

All in all I think it looks okay, will really tell better next year when the roses are back in bloom and my plants have all spread out….

it looks well balanced Lincs and as you say why dig out the concrete when it can be screened. it will look lovely next year and it is the perfect time to get your bulbs bought and in.

Gosh, that was exhausting I’ll bet, but certainly rewarding. Looks really good, Lincslass! I’m looking forward to seeing all the colour next year! It’ll be lovely.

Brilliant out of box thinking!!! Not 100% sure of the meaning, but you know what I mean lol. It will look even better in the future....... Who is this Charlie Dimmock? Erm ..meaning your garden design skill, not for the other things she was famous for:-))

Sounds like you had a really exhausting day - digging up & replanting those roses! They should look much better next year. They will have had the chance to put out new roots before the winter starts as the soil will still be quite warm. I wonder though if you shouldn't have pruned them back so as to avoid wind rock on the one hand & also so that they don't struggle to grow before the roots get established?

Wow Lincslass you have really been working hard.
It is really shaping up beautifully. All that hard work
will really pay off next year. Look forward to see next years garden.

Seaburn thanks, I'm saving my legs, found a pack of 200 spring mix online last night so they should arrive in the next few days, the slabs will probably need levelling when they've had a good downpour on them, I just know it will sink a bit but all in all I'm quite pleased with it... ..

Thankyou Siris...

Kate thankyou, it was hard going at times but I got there, don't let things like that beat me when it comes to my garden, lol...

Anget its a fact I never put on weight through sitting about, when in gardening mode I work all the calories off before they get chance to settle anywhere.......

Ba you always make me laugh. Nope !! I sure haven't got Charlies assets, financial or otherwise, think I lean more towards Geoff Hamilton, make do with what you've got, good bit of recycling , aye!!

Hi Balcony, I have taken a third off , I'll do them again in a few weeks, then right down in February, as they were all growing near the g'house they were huge, think the glass always encouraged them to grow big, especially the Peace Roses, I'm going to talk nicely to them, that'll do the trick, lol, plus they'll soon be having a proper mulch from my compost bin....

Lilybell we both have to be patient now but I must admit I'm looking forward to seeing if they like their new homes...I love working in my garden but we won't mention housework , lol....

What a difference,Sue,it looks great, and I can already visualise the result you are aiming for.I hope you didn't move those slabs and Bird bath on your own ! Definitely a few 'choice words' would have been uttered by me as well, with all that work you have done already..Lol.Well done, and just don't over do it,but I guess that will fall on deaf ears ..:o) xx

Phew, I'm tired out just reading through your blog! Well done on utilising the area well ... looking forward to seeing it progress.

Thankyou Klahanie, I do love my roses and think they'll look good in that setting...

It looks nice now, it's going to be a wonderful transformation. What did you do with the white stones ? I must say I didn't like them, they made it look a bit like a grave :( Will you be putting them somewhere else ?

21 Sep, 2020

I did move slabs and half the birdbath but hubby used the wheels for the plinth, I never overdo it in my garden Sandra, lol.....

21 Sep, 2020

Shirley I think it will look smashing next springtime, hubby nags me at times about making my garden easier, this is my answer to him, lol...

Hywel you saw exactly what I did, it was freaky, I will use them to edge the bed that is behind the fishpond, I have a pathway next to the fencing, I like to keep the granite away from the garden, I'd already pinched the pavers, now I can replace them....

21 Sep, 2020

Quite right! :o))

21 Sep, 2020

Wow, Sue, you have worked hard and in the hot weather too! I am like you, if I have to move something, I do it there and then using Empathy root grow and water them and talk to them ! The talking usually works! Hahaa! Its going to look brilliant next year.

23 Sep, 2020

Thankyou H'bird, I think that also, its getting a much needed drink today, nice steady showers all day so that should really perk the new planting up and one of the roses has a new bud on it....

23 Sep, 2020

Rose they all had a proper talking to as well as a dunking and a feed, I was going to wait but didn't fancy digging them out in the winter, so took advantage of the good weather, the way the rest of my garden is behaving this year it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see the roses burst forth with new shoots, especially now its raining, in fact one of the orange ones has developed a new flower bud., I spotted it earlier..

23 Sep, 2020

My roses are the same Sue! In fact some of the perennials which had finished are all coming back.
Weird weather isn't it !
