Dragonflies

At the back of top pond are a few clumps of Iris Laevigata where the dragonflies lay their eggs.
Two afternoons running I have watched a sparrow take dragonflies which have just emerged from Nymph so still unable to fly to under patio table pull the wings off & then eat completely. Intelligent sparrow but I’ll have no dragonflies at this rate!

Sorry Lin, the old website is still on screen, as the National Dragonfly Museum moved away from Ashton Mill to water 15 miles east of Oundle some years ago. Have rummaged around and find its now at Wicken Fen, Ely, Cambs. Title seems to be The National Dragonfly Project (formerly Dragonfly Bio Museum.)
They have a Dragonfly Day scheduled for Sunday 29th July. That was the Course I went on at Ashton Mill. Its very good.
The contact Tel. No. is 01733 204 286 over the cheapie lines at the weekend, to ask how to protect emerging Dragonflies from birds.

That is nature I guess, some will make it hopefully Lin. Have a look at this link to Bampy's dragonflies.

I had no idea that there were ways of protecting the dragonflies. I'll give them a ring.

I'll check out that link too.
Thanks a lot to you both.

Really I think Ruary should do an information blog - people live miles away and cant attend his Courses.
The old Ashton Mill item should be updated. Expect he is busy.

Diane I find that happens with so many websites that seem to remain out of date for years.
I'll get back to you on the d.f.'s. This p.m. I'm going to a garden party so hope the weather holds - if not, inside.

Made contact with hcdragon and Henry replied saying he'd had similar problems last 2 yrs with Blackbirds. Birds cause high mortality, up to 50% per day. Nothing one can do other than to supply food use cds hung over pond which I don't want to do or stand guard! There is a constant supply of food all yr so I imagine they just enjoy the extra protein.
I've found 5 fat larvae on the Pseudacorus in the bottom pond & birds don't seem to venture onto those so all is not lost!
Incidentally, the website is now updated - perhaps you had a word.
