Woodland walk with quite a surprise at the end!

Pru, Jazz and Sluggy were in need of a long walk. We are so lucky here, to be able to just open the back door, walk past the paddocks and into the woods. I noticed all the amazing wild flowers, honeysuckles, hazelnuts just begining to plump up. There were so many mazing plants I took photos of, most of which I do not know the names of….

Well I know these are hazelnuts, I pick kilos of them in early autumn.

Not quite sure what these are but they are pretty

And wild honeysuckle, with the most wonderful scent.

Again, a very pretty wild flower….

Is this a Hogweed I see in the distance? I treck through deep brambles and lots of nettles to get a closer look!

The pups are thirsty by this time having chased goodness knows what, at great speed, with much woofing! Jazzy must be better to have done that!

And here was the surprise, my favourite tree in the wood, a giant Beech tree with it’s central trunk having fallen to the ground.

The splinters were amazing….

I just had to take some home!

So Sluggy, having had a great walk is now in the garden following me around as usual…

Cat happy to be fed too!

I am now wondering what to do with the splinters! Some were stuck into the ground like arrows about 8" deep!!
I may have to ask Bampy what I can make out of them!!

you have that artist eye alright! the splinters look really good standing up like that.
i think that tall flower is rosebay willow herb and the next red one is a red campion ~ i think??

Thanks Sticki, I do have a 50 year old wild flower book it's just taking the time to trull through them.
Am about to blog my garden...and a few bird shots and have been trying to find the tag of a rose...can't find it anywhere, really annoying. I am pants at logging things...must be my artistic temperement!

can i pretend i have that problem too? i am rubbish at sorting it out ~ just never seem to get round to getting rid of photos i dont need so then its hard to find anything i want.
i am not an artist but i cant get everything sorted out either. :-(

Sticki is right . . . rose bay willowherb and red campion. Brilliant use of "splinters" Lulu - they look amazing!

How lucky you are to have a lovely walk like that right outside your home :) What a shame about that tree though, I agree with sticki, they look great stood straight up like that.

Fantastic, Love that tree and the Rosebay willowherb has got to be one of the most beautiful weeds.

Oh Amy. had to take the Ascot outfit off Goy because Hubby doesn't like to be on the internet (unless he is riding horses or playing his drums and anyway am sure you saw it, the short time i dared to put it on!!) Puss is about 4/5 feral, bluecross cat.
Just love those weeds.....am sure |i have seen them growing in the garden and just pulled them out. funny thing is, they do take over if you leave them.....

Hi Lulu! Just leave the willowherb in the woodland! In the past I have heard it called another name...Wildfire! 'cause it spreads like...! They are lovely in a big dark pink clump; the other reason it's called wildfire, but it's hard to get out of the garden primarily because it seeds like the divil, it's like a giant version of a dandelion! It's great to see Jazzy up and galloping again, it's awful if a pet's not well, you feel so helpless. Why don't you go back to your special tree and get some tinier splinters and incorporate them into one of your marvellous mosaics? I was on your site earlier on this evening, but I had to go and answer the flippin' phone to a chatterbox friend, so I couldn't leave a comment, but I'll go back tomorrow, er, later today! (have to go to bed, Goy is so addictive!) and post one! You're getting better and better, such a lovely eye for just the sparest shape of an animal or bird (chook!) they're just gorgeous! Boring you now...I'm rambling...!Lol!

Libet, you can never bore me, I love your responses!! I leave everything in the woodland!!!!! Interesting to know though!
Jazzy is much better except she is now having phantom puppies.....soft toys....Squirrell, Monkey, Sealypup and halfalip! She is nesting and squeaking alot!
I do plant to go back to the woods....maybe borrow the studs quadbike and trailer! I need to ask someone how I season the splinters, then work out what to do with them!!
So as they say, watch this space!!

Lol! That's lovely Lulu! Where in the world do you get these names from...halfalip! I snorted tea down my nose! Hope you're happy!!
Poor wee Jazzypup, are they treating her, or will she just stop 'nesting'?
I think you're right to go back and get some more wood, it's such a gorgeous colour...hope it stays like that when it's seasoned, probably oil will restore it...the shapes are so inspirational, lovely and spikety! I'm sure there's a project in there somewhere!
I'm space-watching... starting from now! ;0) Lol!

Spikety bits put out of the sun!!
Sadly can't treat Jazzypup for nesting but we will have her speyed as soon as we can.
Halfalip was a whole lips....fluffy dog toy which Sluggy ravaged! I am imagining the tea snorting!!!
Happy to be gardening today, in the sunshine!
We have a friend who is a carpenter, he will know what to doo with the Beechwood.......still watching I hope!

lovely to have a nice walk with the crew lulu, love the splinter to, i thought of a rustic looking boat to place near your pond as one of them would make a great sale for boat, just an idea:o))

Blog garden and photos are great Lou, well done

Good idea Cristina, I need to preserve them first, I think the wood would rot if stuck in the ground. Would like to ask Bampy but he's on his travells!

Great blog on your forest walk! No forests around here to walk in! :-((

When I was reading about your find of the splinters I thought, before continuing further down, that surely you could find an artistic project for them! LOL!

I recognized a couple of the plants you couldn't name! I'm not usually very good at ID-ing wild plants!
