Grandpas garden

As its fathers day we had dinner with grandpa whos 86 and not been in very good health recently. he has always gardened and comes from a family of gardeners. due to a disability he cannot do much himself but still gets a lot of pleasure from his little plot especially watching the bird life. he has a man in once a week to do the grass and fight the weeds and we help when we can which unfortunately is never enough. As he has lived in this house for over 50 years the garden has a wonderful sense of maturity which I dont have in my own garden. I though I would take some photos to share
view down the garden
I love the archtecture of the grass surrounding the birdbath with the self seeded alchimella at is feet
This is one of the original English roses Abraham Darby
At the bottom of the garden is a shady spot. the hedge is mixed including holly and hawthorn and the birds love it
I dont know the name of this beautiful geranium but shall have to beg a bit next spring
In the shady border the golden hop meanders through the ferns
A tiny pond made from my father in laws mothers old water kettle. there are frogs and tadpoles every year.
Grandpa kindley let us have a patch to grow potatoes and rhubarb (our two daughters favs)
Sun setting over a garden full of happy memories for all the family

Lovely garden and I imagine your Grandpa has many happy memories of planting the many shrubs and plants in his garden. My Mum has lived in the same house for 57 years but her garden is not a patch of your Grandpa's. The Rose is a beauty.

I'm imagining what it must be like to grow old surrounded by so much beauty. It must be something special, that much I'm sure of.
I love the geranium. Very unusual. The rose is a stunner too. And the little pond....oh I could go on forever :)

A lovely garden - My father was a keen gardener until he was in his 90's. He would have loved this too especially the geranium and the birdbath. Best wishes to him and long may he enjoy his lovely garden

Mageth what a lovely garden for your grandad to spend the twilight of his years in, obviously years of loving care. My grandpa used to say gardeners didn`t get old they just ripened.lol.

thanks Oddbillie. Its a good idea to take photos of your garden I think. we have had our own garden for 12 years now and when I look back at the photos it brings back lots of memories. My lavender hedge was bought on a trip to Downderry nursery in Kent which must win the prize for the most romantic setting and I remember going there with my husband to buy them. there was also a very fine old pub just down the road!
