Hurry Up Spring!

I’m an impatient sort of person (not a good personality trait I know) and once I have something in my head I just have to do it. I’ve been watching Carol Klein on TV and reading Gardeners world and Amature Gardening magazine and it has left me itching to get started in the garden. And, to make things worse I have discovered the joys of Wilkinsons! Oh my, the abundance of perennials (3 boxes for £5), seeds (buy 2 packets get 1 free), soft fruit (blueberries and raspberries £1.98 each). So in the words of Viv Nicholson I have “spent, spent, spent” and much to the delight of my husband the resulting bill has not used up all of my daughters inheritance!

So I have spent a miserable Saturday and Sunday insulating the mini greenhouse I got from Wilkinson’s(£15), potting up the perennials, Hosta x3, Astilbe x3, Paeonia x1 (lovely shade of red), Raspberry ‘Polka’ x3 and Blueberry ‘Stonecrop’ x2. I have also potted up some winter flowering jasmine that my friend gave me that had layered itself in her garden. Last week I sowed some of the seeds I got free from AG last year (a bit early I know but I did say I was impatient) and have turned a spare bedroom and the utility room into mini greenhouses. This is the first time I have tried growing my own bedding plants so I hope I haven’t spoilt it by being impatient! I have ordered some patio Buddleia, virginia creeper and a Lonicera Japonica Halls Prolific. I have started chitting my Charlotte potatoes and bought some peas ‘Kalvedon Wonder’. Oh and against all advice I have planted a russian vine! That’s scratched an itch – for now.

Yep you`ve got the bug, we`re all itching to get things started, trouble is the rains come back here so all soggy again, a few things started in my greenhouse so I feel a bit better as well, it helps with peace of mind, lol.....

I'm like you, mandym, couldn't wait to start this year's growing season. I pricked out a tray of my cauliflower seedlings last week. Anyway, some plants need to be sown early to give of their best, eg. begonia semperflorecens.
Keep us posted on your babies' progress, mandym. With a bit of luck the weather willl be kind to us. Lol.

Good for you Mandy, even if it all goes wrong...at least you enjoyed yourself! I had that 'mood' a couple of weeks ago and my first seeds are now germinated in the greenhouse! I have to say though....Russian Vine.....eeeeek!! Dig it up quick and plant something nice! :))) Sorry too cheeky, I know, but I am a clematis addict and you could have had something almost as fast growing but much classier! I do like your patio Buddliea idea though...I had thought about trying these myself...mmmm...we'll see!

Not too cheeky at all Karen, everyone has warned me about it! But I have an extremely long, north facing fence with a terrible view of the neighbours 'garden' that needs covering quickly. I'm going to give it a year and if it is too outrageous I'll take it out. I tried clematic 'montana', but it never grew more that 2 foot!

Oh yes, I see your difficulty!

This made me smile, Mandy, as there must be countless homes with the spare room turning into the propagating area! I shall be doing the same tomorrow, I forgot to buy seed compost and spent an hour sifting multi-purpose for seed sowing. Couldn't believe the amount of rubbish within the bag, useless for seeds. Look forward to seeing your progress on the seeds. : o )

You too Shirley, being a novice I made sure I had all the whistles and bells as my mum would say! I'm sure the novelty of making sure I have ALL the right compost wears off. :-)

You've made a good start there Mandy, thats exactly how I started, with a mini greenhouse only a few years ago. I now have 2 greenhouse's and I'm looking to put a walk in plastic one between them. Don't forget to fleece the pots when its cold. Best of luck.

Thanks littlelegs, I've insulated the mini greenhouse with bubble wrap and carpet and laminate floor underlay. I've just been out to check and it's lovely and warm in there.

You've been busy. I wish you luck with all your efforts.
Those mini green houses are handy aren't they. They hold such a lot.

Oh Mandy, you've been making great progress and what a lot of bargains you've snapped up too. I bought one of the same mini-greenhouses you have at B&Q and paid £21 in their sale. Thought that was a good price....but my goodness, Wilki's price is fantastic.

I'm only beginning to sort out our back garden....only have topsoil and a patio at the moment, waiting on turf and then I can start planting up borders. Seeds will be next on the list so I can make use of the greenhouse...I'll sure be watching your progress. You've done so much already! Good for you. Happy gardening :)
