Those of you who saw the last GWorld programme might remember the tip about tulip planting from Monty…
Instead of bending to plant the bulbs,he suggested using a crowbar to make the holes.Having recently had a few mobility problems,I thought I would try it.I remembered we did have a crowbar. It’s quite heavy to pick up(could prove difficult for arthritic hands)
but so easy to make the holes in the soil at the depth you want.Another gardening job made easier!

I simply get down on my hands and knees and use my bare hands. My soil at this point is like fine sifted cake flour when baking a cake. A pencil would grow if I planted it, lol! I can play in the dirt and look like I'm actually doing work. Yes, I'm planting the spring bulbs but I'd hardly call it work. It's fun.

Sounds a good idea but crow bars are heavy. If you have soft soil you could use a broom stick instead I suppose :)

I just splashed out and bought a bulb planter but not sure why as most of my new tulip bulbs are for my containers...easy to get carried away in garden centres isn't it?

Hi, I find that a steel bar with a point at one end, and a ring at the other,[as used for temporary roping off af an area of land, does the job quite adequately, I think that unless you're planting thousands of bulbs, a bulb planter is an expensive novelty, especially the long handled ones, ther's no reason at all why they should cost so much, but that's my opinion, others may not agree, Derek.

Yeh. I have a bulb planter and a crowbar. My son in Sweden has an old tool he found in the barn which is a combination of both but not so heavy. Not much use for me in Scotland tho'.

Seems like a good idea, I missed that programme, but will certainly try it. I have a bulb planter, but on really heavy clay it just doesn't work!
