First project for 2020.

The weather being unseasonably mild,we were able to start the new garden project earlier in the year…..having changed the drive corner last summer,it was always intended to continue the slate edging down the drive….at first glance it looks a simple job,but achieving the correct levels and dealing with shrub roots (ones I couldn’t move or even wanted to)proved trickier than expected. The last photo shows the corner from which we started.
Firstly, the soil was dug out and levelled…my son and OH were very pleased to help which was good. The spoil also came in handy elsewhere in the garden….the bark was racked back.
We then laid the bricks on the inner side….membrane fitted before the chunky plum slate was laid.Previously there were several groups of sedums growing there…these were easily removed and planted elsewhere.
Now the blackbirds will be foxed,.no more sweeping up of the bark flicked onto the drive!…….
Have attached a photo of the finished area for you to see…..we are quite pleased with the result, although there are a few errors which had to be hidden. At 73 I think my OH has done well, although he did say this is the last!!! Ha ha,
Now (quietly saying to myself ) what’s next!!!!!

It looks good. It finishes the area off very nicely. I like the pots you've put to stand on it too :)

That looks very neat Meadowland, well worth the effort and aches! Your choice of pots adds interest too, I love them.

Looks great! Those Blackbirds will have to go to the gym if they want to flick that chunky slate about! Very smart. And its a great time of year to get these jobs done if its mild enough. Working with heavy stuff in the summer time just gets too hot!

It looks lovely Julia. You have a clever hubbie ! I wish Rick wasn't so disabled now as I really need to something about our drive !
Happy New Year to you both.

Julia, it looks really effective. Very eye catching too. Love the contrast of the slate against the choisya and grasses etc.
I agree about bark chipping, it’s nice, but the wildlife do love chucking it all over!

The whole effect is very attractive and it really enhances the plants in the bed next to it.
What will mild weather lead to next, I wonder?!!

That looks really good meadowland. I have problems with the blackbirds too. I feed them & they reward me by chucking soil all over the paths You have given me the idea, so I think I'll soon be buying some slate!

It looks great Meadow, and the contrast very attractive. The blackbirds are a nuisance aren't they, lovely birds though. They do like to pick off clumps of moss from my roofs, and there are a few, and throw them down just outside the kitchen door, they're probably waiting for me to open it!

That is a brilliant result. I know what you mean by the blackbirds and their flicking bark habits. The squirrels also dig in it too.
well done hubby though I am sure that he will do other jobs as they don't like to consider them selves 'past it'. Well that will apply to my hubby.
