Early March 2013

Such a lovely day today! It won’t last, but what a great day to spend gardening.

It is lovely to see the garden coming to life again. There are daffodils and tulips pushing up – it won’t be long until the daffs are out. I have them all over the place and so look forward to them.

In the meantime, I can enjoy the snowdrops and crocuses.

These are in the herb bed, and there are lots more in the border beyond:

Crocuses are a great favourite of mine and I plant more every Autumn. They spread prolifically as well. There are lots in the lawn which were not planted deliberately.

I rather like these white ones. My grandmother always said that the birds eat yellow crocuses. I don’t know if this is always the case, but I have never planted any because of it! Perhaps I should try – what do you think?

I definitely didn’t plant this one!

Then there are the hellebores – so lovely with their subtle colours and markings :

Finally, the wild area which really comes into its own in Spring, before the leaves appear on the overhanging sycamores. The photo doesn’t really do justice to the snowdrops:

Postscript:

I have bought a new patio set – very posh after the very tired old plastic one we had before. Now, the question is – have I completely scuppered the possibility of our having a halfway decent summer this year?!

What lovely colourful blog! I don't know about birds eating yellow crocus but you could always give it a try!

I love the crocus you've got that's settled happily between your paving slabs.

Your new patio set looks very posh. Hope you (and all of us) get lots of opportunity to enjoy our garden seating of whatever kind we have:)

Oh I do love to see the crocus and snowdrops in a natural setting and yours look stunning.
Love your new patio set and will keep fingers crossed that we have the good weather for you to get full use of it.

Wonderful drifts of snowdrops and crocuses there Susanne! Yes, I've heard that birds like to eat the yellow ones . . . certainly the purples seem to last a lot longer whatever the reason.

Thanks Louisa - it is always heartwarming to see a plant making its home somewhere unexpected!

We are all well Kath, thank you - hope you are too. The crocuses have suddenly all opened up in the last week - I'm sure yours will not be far behind.

Thanks Sticki - just as long as I don't get the blame if summer does go pear-shaped!

Thank you Stroller - the snowdrops have been gradually increasing over the last 40 years. Their forbears were brought up from Surrey and arrived via my mother's garden.

I think the birds' penchant for yellow crocuses is actually true, Sheila, but I really ought to give it a go, I think. Maybe this Autumn!

I love everything on here: the way your crocuses grow, your lovely hellebores and the splendid new table and chairs.
Here's to many enjoyable cups of coffee and glasses of wine!

Thank you Wildrose - I'll drink to that!

Lovely blog, lots of lovely spring blooms. I love those white crocus, beautiful. Love the new furniture, very posh. lol :O)

Thanks Barbara. Yes - I can't quite believe I've actually upgraded! Just hope we get to use it this year. Last year the steamer chair only came out three times all season. In summer, at the first sign of blue sky, OH and I are straight outside. Last year was very disappointing...

You will get lots of pleasure for the new patio set -I'll second Scotkat's order of sunshine for you.
In Sheffield the birds did eat all the yellow crocuses but I haven't tried them in Wales. Mine are all purple and very gorgeous when the sun shines. Don't have very many yet though. Yours are lovely.

How lucky you are.

6 Mar, 2013

I love crocuses - my favourite spring flowers. Mine are slow this year, but yours are beautiful.
I like your new furniture. I hope we get the weather for you to use it :o)

Thank you Steragram, Katarina and Hywel.

I very much hope the orders are filled correctly, Stera - then I'll share it with all of you!

I do indeed feel very lucky, Katarina.

Yes, Hywel, crocuses are beautiful - so shiny, and they last quite a long time too. I'm sure yours will be out before too long - just a bit more sunshine needed, probably.

Now I'll know who to blame if summer doesn't happen Mel!Hahaa! Love the pictures! I like your woodland area too. I'm hoping we get a new patio set this year too. I bet you can't wait to sit out there with a cuppa!

I certainly can't wait, Rose! I always find this time of the year so full of promise in the garden, then realise I've actually got to be patient. The new set is swaddled in a cover - wise, of course, but I want it uncovered so I can gaze on it from the house and admire it. And dream about unlimited sunshine in which to enjoy it, of course!

Thanks Terra - it's very grey and damp here now. I'm glad I was able to take advantage of the sunshine while it lasted.

I wish Spring would arrive here, Mel! Its so dark and dreary! I think the sun has forgotten how to shine!

9 Mar, 2013

I know - it's rotten, isn't it? Quite cold too. Son no.2 is in Edinburgh on his stag w/e. I think it's rather unpleasant there, as well. Son no.1 is best man. I'm sure they'll be enjoying themselves, though. It's quite a gathering of old friends.

Since the lovely sunny day we had - only four days ago! - it's been dreary. I just can't wait for this winter to end. "Won't be long now" I keep saying to myself!

Some beautiful colour.....I hope your garden sees the sun again too!!

9 Mar, 2013

Thank you Paul - that is what we are hoping for! Snow just disappearing from shady areas now. We just had a couple of fairly light falls (horizontal ones because of the wind!) unlike further south.
