Spring borders and new life in the garden

We have finally had sunshine which made it warm enough to sit out in the garden – there was a strong south westerly blowing but we are saved from most of the strong winds by the wood which wraps around the garden. The only wind which seems to get to us is the Westerlies from across the dual carriageway.

The crocus are going over now and making way for the narcissi and daffodils and the pretty polyanthus – allowing them their time to show off their beautiful colours.

In the big middle border you can just see the red/bronze shoots of Lysimachia Firecracker poking through the bare soil. It is quite invasive but in this big border that is always a good thing for me. The little yellow flowers are tiny but a good contrast (when they appear) to the foliage.

It is hard to imagine that this border will soon be filled with so much colour. Each season brings its own delights in the borders and I always thought that June/July was the best time in my garden. That was until I looked back in my photographs and saw the amazing colours in August and September even when we had had such a terrible summer.

So I have realised that patience is a virtue and our gardens will not let us down regardless of how much or how little rain or sunshine we get, we just have to go with the flow and enjoy each season as it comes along.
So please enjoy your gardens and whatever the weather throws at us. I hope you all get a little sunshine and a little rain in your gardens to enable the flowers to grow and to keep you all happy and smiling.

Lovely garden Barbara, thanks for reminding me of what we've got to look forward too its been such a long winter, I managed to get a bit of seed sowing done this morning and nice to see the seeds I sowed last week poking through in the greenhouse, unlike you though we aren't shielded from the wind(as you know top of a hill) and while preparing veg for tea I looked up to see 2 panes of my greenhouse flying past the window into next doors plot lol, glad to say I rescued them and they're back in place, wind seems to have eased a bit now thank goodness.

Its lovely Olive and doesn't it lift the mood when able to be outside even if only for a short while, we seem to have waited so long for that pleasure, patience is s'posed to be a virtue but gor blimey I'd lost mine the last few weeks.
Very windy today but we've had a lovely red sky so it looks promising, hope its the same for you....

Thank you so much for badly needed encouragement!

You're all so kind :O) glad you liked it, the wind has dropped here tonight, seems much calmer. We sat outside and had lunch in the sunshine. The daylight hours are getting longer and plants are growing by the day. Everything looks to be recovering from all the wet last year with the exception of a couple of Heucheras which I think I shall have to replace - but what a good way to spend some money, walking around the gc and finding them and maybe different ones too. lol :O) I hope Mr.Osborne keeps increasing my pension or I shall run out of money soon. lol :O)

Lovely blog Mum! You reminded us all that it is no use being impatient. We can't rush nature. Your garden was incredible last autumn. My garden in Dundee was always at its best in spring, with all the Rhodys. This garden is best in summer I think, with all the roses and Clems. But every year it matures and changes, and that in itself is a joy...seeing it mature. I did consider lunch outdoors today, but the wind was a bit too fierce. However, I did buy two brand new sun loungers with my 20% off voucher at Dobbies, so lets hope we get to use them this year! The old ones got wet and rotted in all the rain last year! ;) x

Lol...only a scot would say that Scottish! :)

Thank you all :O) I am so pleased you enjoyed the blog. I am not a very patient person myself especially when the weather is not good.

I do not take out the plant supports, I leave them in so that I do not have to trample over the borders more than once to tidy them over and because when they have worked and held the plant up I would never remember where they were LOL ;O) and they would never be in the right place again. lol :O)

I think the ones you are looking at Moti are the Asters which are a very dark pink/purple depending on which eye you use. lol I say pink others call it purple, my oh always calls dark pinks purples I call them dark pink we always disagree over shades of colours. lol. will try and look and see what the name is of the aster it is a shorter variety and is quite a useful plant just there in the border.

Karen think you are tempting fate just a little but I am sure we are going to get at least some sunshine this summer so you will get to use those loungers - eventually. lol The wind has dropped and it is bright and sunny this morning still no rain here.

sorry Moti, think you have asked before about these, the label is not with them. But they are a shorter variety and bush out nicely. Sorry I am hopeless with name tags.

It's true....she isn't very patient! Lol ;)

Another lovely blog Barbara ! I love looking at your garden!
Thanks for saying what you did as I'm not very patient ! We still can't sit out yet as the last two days have been strong south westerlies which come straight at us and nearly knock you off your feet. Its also drying the borders out too much, but I won't complain as we don't want another wet summer, do we !

15 Apr, 2013

I love your garden, so natural and all those colours !!! Makes you just want to sit out there and enjoy just looking at it!

15 Apr, 2013

I agree. I always picture myself sitting at the table joining in one of Mum's BBQs!

15 Apr, 2013

Thanks everyone, yes a bbq would be nice, think we had one last year if that :O( My bbq's are not that spectacular Karen lol. although the company is good when we do get to have one. You would be very welcome. I have two bags of charcoal ready for burning!

Andreamaik thats what I like doing too, off out in moment with my coffee, have watered pots and planters so have been busy - deserve my coffee now :O)

Rose we do not want the water we had last year but I bet the allotments are drying out fast. I haven't even started to dig in my veggie patch yet, still got a sore knee. I shall get out there soon though sore knee or not cos I want to get some seeds in.

Isnt it great when all the right signs are there showing us that any time now all those new shoots will be bursting onward and full of colour as you have shown us in your photos.
As you remind us its well worth waiting for.

At least the winds have changed direction, recently OloveO.The winds throughout March were so cold?
Looking forward to seeing pictures of those lovely big borders in full bloom later on!

16 Apr, 2013

Thanks Stroller and Paul :O) Good that the Northerly wind has gone, that one bites through you :O) we are protected from the easterlies by the wood. Hope you are able to both get out into the gardens and enjoy some sunshine. :O)

16 Apr, 2013

The strong winds have dried out the ground so much , that in some parts it is cracking ! There's never a happy medium is there, Barbara !

18 Apr, 2013

very windy here Rose today, I popped over to Scunthorpe this morning and it rained but when I got back we had hardly had a wetting so I dragged out the hosepipe and watered for two hours. I had put some new plants in so it needed it. It looks better now. :O)
