Visit to Chartwell - Home of Sir Winston Churchill

A few weeks ago OH had a day off from work – so we thought we’d spend the day at a National Trust property. Decided to go to Chartwell, as we haven’t visited the property in a long while and have never seen the roses in bloom whilst we’ve been there before.
You arrive at the back of the house and walk through some of the informal gardens. I took lots of pictures but won’t send you to sleep with them all – just a few…
The Pergola is absolutely beautiful. The area at the end has the most beautiful frieze…
This is the back view of Chartwell through the archway…
Views of the Wall garden
One of Winston’s garden seats!
Another view of the House
This was a fabulous purple/lilac plant – Have no idea what it is. There wasn’t any plant sticks… Any ideas?
It seems they’ve got a problem with their Hosta’s…
A couple more pictures of the Borders – wish mine looked as buxom as these!
This is what I came for – The Rose Walk. The Churchill children had 50 different varieties of yellow roses planted to celebrate their parents Golden Wedding Anniversary.
I was not disappointed! The border is 54 years old and I think there may possibly be at least one or two plants that are the originals! In the Sitting Room there is a book on display, in which there are pictures painted by various artists, of each of the 50 varieties planted in the Rose Walk!!!
How superb is that? And what a wonderful gift!!!
OH and I now head around to the front of the house to start the tour inside first we have to pass the Kitchen Garden and Wendy House.
Views out over the Downs. (I really need to get a new camera for sharper pictures!)
Anyone for Croquet?
It’s here at the front of the house where on his return home, whether from a business or pleasure trip – Winston always exclaimed in delight “Aaahhh Chartwell… !”
And it’s here where OH and I go inside – but the tour ends for you – Hope you’ve enjoyed the Rose Walk as much as I did – I’m glad to have seen it at last and it lived up to my expectations too! :o)))))

Thank you both - I'm glad you've enjoyed it. Have just googled Allium pulchellum Pimp, and me thinks you are right! I've noticed that a lot of the NT gardens don't display plant sticks :( It's very frustrating when you see something you really like!

Wow Tracey - brilliant blog - thank you. I've always wanted to visit Chartwell, and now I've seen it. Were some of Churchill's own paintings displayed in the house?

Yes Sheila, the house is full of his pictures, and the studio in the garden is also open for you to view his paintings too.
Glad you've enjoyed the tour!

Thank you Petaltracey, lovely walled garden.
Some years ago on a cycle tour I visited Winston Churchill's grave. The Churchwarden on duty told me, that ever since the War, every Saturday afternoon, young people have gone to that Churchyard to stand by Winston's grave. Thats something you dont hear about on the tele !

I went a few years ago and thought it a lovely place, although its big its not huge and as I walked around the house it somehow felt homely, his wifes bedroom I thought lovely with windows on three sides and downstairs in front of the french doors a table was set for tea........
The gardens are lovely as you said Petal and we went to his studio ......I thought some of his perspective as bad as mine.......but that wasn't the point, like the wall he kept rebuilding (they tookpart of it down when he went back to London) it kept him calm during the awful wartime years.
Thanks Petal you stirred some lovely memories

Great blog Tracey. I didnt know about the history of the rose garden. A lovely piece of recent history, makes it easy to see and imagine the Churchills when they actually lived there. I liked all the personal touches through the house, like the photographs and personal bits and pieces given by Clementine to the NT. The picture of the chair by the stream makes it easy to imagine him sitting there relaxing and thinking over all the problems he had to face whilst he was in government. I must visit it again soon.

Really glad you've all enjoyed my tour of Chartwell - and I'm pleased to have stirred some memories too! It's lovely inside the house too and although Clementine didn't like Chartwell (Winston purchased the house without her knowledge -something unheard of these days eh?) she had excellent taste in furniture and soft furnishings. Shame I couldn't photograph inside the house for you all. But if you're ever over the Westerham area of Kent - do visit you won't be disappointed :o)))))

Hi. I work in the gardens at Chartwell and stumbled across your lovely blog. Great stuff! Glad you enjoyed your visit. The purple plants you asked about is Allium cernuum in case you hadn't already worked that out. We've recently been planting more of them around the garden.
Incidentally, I write the garden blog at Chartwell. You can read new updates each week at http://chartwellgardensnt.wordpress.com/
We hope to see you there again soon...

Hi again Tracey
I am thinking about writing a blog about some of the other blogs that have been written about visits to the gardens at Chartwell. Would you be willing to allow me to include your blog in this and perhaps just write a few words about why you visited us and what you thought about Chartwell?
You can contact me at jamie.harris@nationaltrust.org.uk if you wish.
Thanks very much
Jamie
