Hi Eileen...Jane here.Have a story think you will like ! Whenwas about 7 years old my bedroom curtains were that heavy material with huge leaf patterns on.One day I found a clutch of eggs on the leaf pattern.Left them and watched in fascination as they turned into little caterpillars !

Dont know if you can guess the rest? Well Icarefully cut a circle out of the curtain,and took them up and dumped them on Dads cabbage patch ! Lol.Never did get caught out but had difficulty explaining the hole to Mum !

And Ray is bonkers ? Lol

Lol Amy.You should have heard Dad chuntering about holes in his cabbages a few weeks later.We still had to eat the cabbages holes and all ! No frills in those days !

Yes, they take them back to the nest to feed their young.

i never knew that and would you believe where the caterpillars are has just been full of wasps the last week or two, maybe thats the reason .

Just seen your photo of the Great White butterfly's eggs. Are they on a Nasturtium leaf? I've watched the cabbage butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves of my Nasturtiums. They hatch out & begin to eat holes in the leaves but never seem to come to much. With the enormous number of eggs I've seen I don't know how there's a Nasturtium leaf left on the balcony! Now, thanks to Linda, I think I may know what has happened to them - they have been carried away by the wasps. I've noticed an increase in wasp activity over the last few weeks as well though I haven't noticed them taking away the tiny caterpillars. I thought they were attraced by the sugary substance that the Busy Lizzies segregate. I have seen them lick this up & I've got 10s of these on the balcony.

could be the wasps taking them alright , seems to be plenty of them here at them moment

caterpillars Balcony :-) wouldnt be suprised if the wasps were a crunchy morsel either as long as you know which one is male and female. Im not sure if many people know that only female wasps sting (My 22 year old daughter who studies natural history at Cambridge teaches me a lot :-) .... ok I will Buzz off now .....

and it seems its the female Midgie is the one who stings too

I thought you probably meant the caterpillars but your reply was ambiguous! I had no idea that it was only the females that sting - well we probably wouldn't be able to distinguish between the sexes anyway!

I don't think that they are cabbage white caterpillars Irish unless they change their appearance as the get bigger. I may be wrong!
