A pair of these colourful birds also dropped by the villa on Christmas Day ... they particularly enjoyed the green grapes!

Louise .. you are so right ... we are spoilt as we do get to see beautiful birds like these on a regular basis ... perhaps we do take it all a little too much for granted!

How did you get such a good picture, aren't they nervy and flighty ?
27 Dec, 2009
No Louise ... this pair was apparently very used to people. They both just flew into the front yard of the villa, perched on a tree branch for a little while then flew down onto the patio chair. They both spent some time sitting on my nephew's arm while he held up a bunch of grapes for them to nibble one!
They were also very quiet which is a little unusual for this breed ... normally they screech very, very loudly!!

Amazing !
Do folks catch and keep them, in their own aviaries - if they're not afraid of people they wouldn't see the danger ? :-/

Yes unfortunately I'm sure this does happen ... once birds like these get used to people and getting close to people in order to get food, they would be easy to capture!

:-(
I don't like to think of that.
I hope they breed well in the wild or they'll become extinct out in the wild.

We only get to see them at our nearest zoological park. We buy little pots of nectar and the birds are all over us, fighting for it - great fun! lovely pic, Bern! :-))

I know...I have seen these birds at the San Diego Zoo. They're incredible!

That is beautiful! The most 'colorful' bird I've ever seen around here would be a cardinal or a blue jay!

The name really fits this bird ... they are brilliant to see in real life Floralhead!

I bet!! I just love the bright colors. What a treat that would be to see!
4 Jan, 2010
They're a relatively small bird but very hard to miss!!
4 Jan, 2010
Best thing seems to be they're not scared so you get a pretty good view!
4 Jan, 2010
no birds around here would let you get close to them unless they are stupid pigeons! they don't care if you walk right by.
4 Jan, 2010
These birds will come to anybody if they think there's food involved ... the lorikeet above is wild and came in to get food from us without a care! Actually there were two of them and they both ate the grapes from my nephew's hand without a worry in the world.

actually they are alot like pigeons then but far more lovely to look at!
