That's really cool, Irish - so they really DO look like the castles you see in the story books! Sometimes I've wondered if they just made up how they looked. But I guess not!

Hi Eileen...Jane here..What is the ice house please ?
17 Feb, 2010
its basically a dug out into the ground Jane where they use to keep things fresh yrs ago like meat
17 Feb, 2010
Wow...amazing how they preserved stuff in those days.We dont know we are born with fridges and freezers Lol My parents only had our pantry in the 50s too !
17 Feb, 2010
pantrys and outside loo's Jane, wouldnt fancy having to use an out side loo in this weather lol
17 Feb, 2010
Remember them well Eileen...and that gross stuff called "Izal" that passed as loo paper...ouch !
17 Feb, 2010
Bb, my uncle used to insist that my aunt bought that stuff .... right up until just a few years ago !
There was 'his' and 'hers' paper in their house !!!!!!!
(yes, i remember it from school too)
17 Feb, 2010

17 Feb, 2010

17 Feb, 2010

good tho wasnt it all the uses for news paper,,,,,, wrap your chips in it, clean windows with it, and as you said emergency loo paper lol
17 Feb, 2010
Well...in truth...loved the taste of chips in newspaper..with loads of salt and vinegar ! Something about the smell....... mmm Ray still cleans the windows with it...learned from his Irish Mum !
17 Feb, 2010
gives a great shine Jane,, now that the sun is starting to shine again i guess i best keep the newspapers and clean my windows lol
