Bernieh:
Happy belated Easter! Sorry, I missed this one on Easter...but we had a major 7.2 earthquake strike south of us...which interrupted our Easter Day, including several after shocks.

Thanks Andy .... sorry it's taken a while to answer your comment. I must have missed the news at Easter time ... I didn't know about the earthquake. Obviously everything is OK with you ... no damage I hope. That would be a rather rude shock on an Easter day!

Just mostly minor damage here...with some sporadic moderate damage around San Diego County. Closer to the epicenter 100 miles/161 km away had major damage and 3 deaths. However, we've been rockin' and a rolling with many 5+ magnitude aftershocks since the 7.2 quake. It's very typical though. I've been through so many major quakes when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area...it doesn't faze me anymore.

I suppose it's similar to the what may seem nonchalant attitude we take to cyclones here ... in fact we're not really that nonchalant, we're just used to it. We know what we can do to prepare and we know what might happen, but that's it ... everything else is up to Mother N.

Bernieh:
Very well put! : > ) I must admit though that the 7.1 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake of Oct.17, 1989 was pretty scary. It caused catastrophic damage to the San Francisco Bay Area. This is the quake which collapsed a section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge and destroyed the Cypress structure (a large double level freeway in Oakland) and so many other structures. It caused billions of dollars in damage.
Luckily, here in San Diego tropical storms are very rare and hurricanes (cyclones) don't happen (only one San Diego hurricane ever recorded, Oct. 2, 1858). Only one Hurricane warning ever issued for Southern Cal. in 1997 for Hurricane Linda (strongest, largest hurricane ever recorded in the eastern Pacific) which never hit. It's described as "the biggest disaster that never happened".

Sorry Andy ... just catching up with your comment. Yes I heard about the '89 quake ... saw all the damage on the news reports here...I remember the shots of the bridge and the freeway.
As for the cyclone that never showed up ... probably a good thing! There's not a lot to be said for cyclones ... even if you don't get hit directly, the rains that come with them and the cyclonic winds as well, are more than enough!

Bernieh:
Several other freeways were severely damaged and closed for months and others had to be destroyed...like the Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco. It was horrible gridlock on all the roads for months.
There's an article based on extrapolation what would have happened if Hurricane Linda hit Southern California at category 4 strength. It's an extremely catastrophic scenario.
