Don't let it stop you from buying them Carole and Lemondog ... so long as you are prepared to keep an eye on them and take them off , it's worth it ...
25 Apr, 2010
My snakeshead fritillary has been eaten up completely but I haven't seen any beetles. They must be somewhere - help!
25 Apr, 2010
Dont they make you want to scream......Lol

Milky:
What is the name of this beetle? It sounds like a little monster beetle.
4 years ago San Diego County was invaded by huge black beetles...however, they didn't eat the plants. I'm assuming these beetles eat many plants?
27 Apr, 2010
lily beetle,, Delonix
27 Apr, 2010
Scarlet lily beetle ... I picked 4 off my Snakeshead Fritillary today , every day I pick some off , you can see them on the stalks but the minute you touch or move they fall to the ground in the grass and then you can't see or find them , I have a jam jar ready to put under them ..... to catch them

Sanbaz, Amy:
Thanks for the information! I've read about this horrible little beetle. Wow! It does a lot of damage the lilies. Also, I've read they've migrated to Canada and the Eastern U.S. from Europe and Asia.
27 Apr, 2010
They are a pest , I use to pick mine off and send them to the John Inns Institute at Norwich where they were breeding them to try to find a solution to the problem , As far as I know they haven't come up with anything yet !
27 Apr, 2010
Amy:
Hopefully the John Inns Institute at Norwich will find a solution soon!
28 Apr, 2010
They are indeed a real pest Delonix...If left on the plant they will defoiliate it in a matter of days whilst leaving their eggs all over it at the same time......
28 Apr, 2010
Milky:
Do pesticides control them?
28 Apr, 2010
Delpnix.....Yes they do We have one called Provado which wipes them out , but a lot of people dont like to use chemicals....I am not one of them Im afraid when it comes to saving my Lily's.....
28 Apr, 2010
Milky:
I don't like using chemical pesticides either, however, sometimes we have to -- to save our plants. : > )
29 Apr, 2010
Exactly.......Lol

I havnt had any for several weeks now since I placed a pot of chives near to my lily pots. before I water or handle the lilies I brush the chives with my hand. Im hoping that as the beetles are thought to home in by scent, the chive smell might mask it
1 May, 2010
I shall have to put on my glasses when I go out...........obviously a bad year for this very obnoxious pest.
3 May, 2010
I haven't had any since I moved house!!!!
22 May, 2010
I've had a few more now :-(
On my fritillaries first and then ..... my alstroemerias, arrrggghhhh :-(((((((
22 May, 2010
Oh dear will I have to keep an eye on our first alstromeria now as well as the the lilies? I am going to try Mageth's idea.
23 May, 2010
Little red devils and they make such a mess on the plants too. I squash them with a stone.
