This was outside a small nursery we often call into on our way to the coast ,they are closing down due to the fact that the business rates and Insurance have been put up to £2500... per month , they opened a small cafe to try to keep it going , I wonder how many more we will see in the same position , we will be left with all the big boys like Wyedale etc.and no proper nurserys ..... .sad !

No Annella , at least not the shrubs , other things in the little shop were reduced by 1/3 rd my husband had been toying with the idea of buying a new hose outfit 'cos his has a leak , they only had one left here , a nice Hoselock one on wheels it should have been £49.99 they sold it to us for £33.. I bought some metal plants supports , packets of seeds half price ... you know the sort of things that you need , I think we were taken by surprise ,we were on a time schedule , I would like to go back and have a good look round I expect by the time we can do that most of it will be gone .....

It is very sad for the nursery but nice to get some bargains :-)))

Such a shame when a small business loses out like that, Amy. You did well with the Hoselock though. Hope you manage to return for more bargains.

It's sad to see the demise of home-grown businesses...the big guys are so greedy at taking over! You got some good bargains but it must be soul destroying for the business owners to sell up everything.

yes as every one is saying its very sad to see small businesses going down especially when they try so hard to make a succes of it.

I blame the councils. It's the same here. You think they'd try to help small businesses. They are so stupid - they're loosing out more this way than if they kept the rates down a bit, because not so many would fold. I have no patience with councils ....

That's so typical of local governments, they sting the small guys every time, and the ones that people would prefer to visit. Why they can't tax the big businesses and subsidise the small ones?????

What a shame to see the small nurseries having to close, someones hopes and dreams shattered, its typical of the times we live in!l

Great bargain.... but sad to see its going to close.....

that`s a shame...there used to be some lovely old fashioned nurseries near me but sadly closed...the bigger garden centers just don`t have the charm of proper nurseries to me

What a deal! Sorry to hear the nursery is closing - gosh, you've got to be making some money to pay that rent, what a shame.

It is a shame , they were a proper nursery only selling plants and a few pots not all these fancy goods that people expect in the big superstores .. .. . they are going to take down all the polytunnels and greenhouses I suppose they will sell them to anyone that's interested ..... I can't understand the logic of this , the councils would be better off receiving £ 1000.. per month than none at all .. you would still have to sell a lot of plants to make a profit in a small nursery ...

What a shame a sign of the times.I am afraid to say.

Amy, this has struck a chord with me today as OH and I took a drive out to the countryside, loved all the Autumn leaves in golds and reds and decided to visit a Nursery which we knew from about 3 years ago. Totally dismayed to find it has gone forever and the land now forms the overspill car park for the train station close by ! We spoke to a lady walking her dog and she said the owners had retired early due to rising cost of rent on the land. Such a shame. : o (((((((

Oh no ! that's awful Shirley , it seems that they always hit the people who try to help themselves ... I have a friend with approx 4 acres very good at growing plants , she decided to grow some and put a few out by her gate , she was told that she could only earn x- amount of money per year , she never did make any money as her husband worried about it so she stopped putting them out ...

Ridiculous red tape all around now ! We used to visit the West Country annually and would look forward to the produce for sale, you know, eggs, fruit and veg. etc. and you just put the money into a box on the table. These days, they'd probably steal the table and everything on it. : o ((((

Your right about that Shirley , the fruit and veg tables i've seen have a drainpipe leading from the table to inside the persons garden into a container to collect the money . ;o(

A sad day for another small business Amy.....

It is sad Jane / Ray this little nursery is in the countryside miles away from any large garden centres i'm sure it will be missed by people who can't travel :o(

i hate it when this happens, i love our little nursery and would hate for it to close, most of the others have cafe`s in them now to boost trade but our village one doesnt, all seems well with ours though and they also do the planting for villages in bloom which boosts takings,

This would do better if it was in the nearest village San . but it's a good 1or 2 miles from the village if you haven't a car it would mean a good walk there and back and often the goods you want are heavy , it's strange really because the village there is a very wealthy touristy place , perhaps they don't understand small nurseries and would rather go to the big stores to fill their trolleys ........

very sad amy ;o( i much prefere small nurseries myself

I find the smaller nurseries have a smaller but better selection of unusual plants and they look healthy and well cared for. I sometimes wonder what sort of HAT the councillors wear sometimes with the decisions they make and that includes planning etc.

Me to Linda , it seems to be the same everywhere ,they are just so greedy , Surely they would rather have some income than none ~~~
