Excellent plant, excellent photo.

That's a great photo and a beautiful plant! I hear they're difficult to grow? Please tell me they aren't! I've avoided trying them for that reason!

it was a present ~ it came as a small plant around october time, then it died down and appeared again in feb/mar. my sister got it from the internet somewhere. i could ask where if you like. i havent done anything to it other than plant it with some compost initially and then it went through a very cold winter ~ -10 [or colder], its in a shady place ~ gets the sun for about an hour or two a day ~ round about now ~ 5-6 in the evening.

Somewhere I read that they're difficult - maybe it's that they're hard to start from seed? I can't remember. I have seen them sold online but haven't wanted to take the chance if they're fussy.

just shade i think ~ karensusan on here grows them ~ she will know better than me.

M. betonicifolia is often short lived and likes peaty soils and some shade. M. x grandis named forms are more perennial.

how can i tell which one this is VD?
21 Apr, 2011
Oh dear, won't suit my garden them but they are rather gorgeous!

Exquisite, I'm not jealous...much:-)

I thought Poppy were easy to start from seed! im onto my second sowing of a white "fluffy" poppy and im not holding out much hope..
That's a beut Stickitoffee..

i didnt grow this from seed but i have others in the garden which either sowed themselves ~ yellow welsh poppies or i put in as a plant, i also sowed some as seed last year, they came up ~ have to wait and see if they come back up?
25 Apr, 2011
Maybe i should just throw the seed onto the borders Sticki lol. the poppy seeds the birds drop on the borders grow no bother :)
25 Apr, 2011
who knows!! hope it works!
25 Apr, 2011
Given up trying to raise these successfully and bought one today with two buds on!!!
25 Apr, 2011
great! hope it lasts ~ have fun with the photographs!!!
25 Apr, 2011
That is a fantastic photo! Isn't it mindblowing how nature makes a blue like that :)
26 Apr, 2011
thanks limpet ~ yes its amazing ~ but it still seems a strange colour in the garden somehow! i love it but it definitely needs mountains and snow!!
26 Apr, 2011
I agree re: the colour, really goes with mountains rather than the garden, somehow.
M. betonicifolia is grown from seed (not always easy) and the M. x grandis will have names and are usually very expensive. The colour varies from various hues of blue to purple.

This is to die for Sticki...love it...and such a clear shot with true colour!

thanks Tet ~ the poppy has gone now so its nice to have photos ~ never as good as reality but it helps the memory!!

I tried growing these from seed last year, and failed miserably :P Great picture though, it looks gorgeous :)
31 May, 2011
im sure you would be fine growing from a plant ~ thats what i did
im thinking of putting a piece of slate behind it ~ i think that would make it look as if it was more natural.
31 May, 2011
That could be nice :):) I might be brave and get a plant sometime if I see one going. Will try again with the seeds in the meantime perhaps... i possibly should have stratified them or something.
