April in the flowerbed

We have planted up a little flowerbed under the stone wall. The soil is clay/chalk and the summer temperatures are too high to grow much else but roses, but spring bulbs make a brave show for a month or so.

But clay keeps the water better then humous soil. So far, you can keep all mediterannean plants and cypruses, too.

Hello again, Katarina - yes, you are right about the clay, but it is very heavy and sticky when wet, and difficult to dig, and when it is dry, it is rock hard, and impossible to weed. Don't forget, we mostly get very long, cold winters here - we live up a mountain, 1,600' above sea level, so most truly Mediterranean plants and the columnar cypresses die quite quickly and regularly under longstanding deep snow. It's surprising how well roses and fruit trees do, and bulbs, of course, if you remember to lift them at the end of the season, so the mice don't dig them up and eat them.

You should plant there bushes which tolerate clay and winters (Cornus spp., Sambucus sp., fruit trees). Their leaves made after years a layer of better soil.
My own experience.
