Black Squirrel in Michigan

Black Squirrel in Michigan

When we were visiting with one of my sons in Michigan in April of this year, we were astonished & delighted to see families of gorgeous black squirrels scampering right up onto their deck, & foraging in their garden. I did not even know there was such a thing as a black squirrel, & having looked it up, it would appear that they are a melanistic form of the common grey squirrel & are now fairly abundant in Ontario, Quebec & Michigan, which sits just below Canada. As they are a melanistic form of the grey squirrel, I imagine they must be seen in the UK from time to time.

Oh wow thats a great photo. We do have them in the UK and they are expected to wipe out the Greys and they are a threat to the Reds also. I have not seen one.

I've never seen one either, although there are a few albino "tree rats" around here.

I can't take credit for this particular photo, as they tend to move so quickly that all the ones I took came out blurred. My son & his wife could not understand why we were so enthused, as there are so many of them scampering about the place that they think they are very common. As we sadly don't have squirrels at all in NZ, I love them whatever colour they are. The albino squirrels must look lovely too.

Lovely, charming or funny, they're still tree rats. Damn things got into our loft a year or two ago, meaning that I had to send the cat up!

Fab pic, Dwyllis!! Would be very concerned if I saw one here, however. :-)

You will do Michaella at some stage as they are in East Anglia and are causing concern!

It's amazing to think they are in East Anglia, as I lived in that area (Clare) for two or three years in the mid-80's & I can't remember ever seeing a squirrel of any colour.

I grew up in North Norfolk Dwyllis and I dont remember them either.

I never knew there was a black squirrel either, never seen one, we do have our fair shair of greys though, have three at this very minute swinging from the bird feeder having a bit of a squabble, and the way they've been planting conkers in the lawn I'll have a forest for a garden next year, quite amusing to watch.

Simbad you are so lucky to have squirrels coming into your garden, no matter what colour. They must be very entertaining. I know when we were visiting a younger son in Michigan in April, there seemed to be dozens of these lovely black ones scampering about & I saw one which was black all over except for the tail, which was red! So I guess there must be some red squirrels in that part of the world too, but I never saw any. When we stayed with my oldest son, who lives a 40 minute drive away from that younger son, on the edge of a golf-course, we never saw a single squirrel.
